The coronavirus is reaching a crescendo in Israel. The country has become the top country in the world for new Corona cases per capita and as usual the political squabbling continues. Coronavirus Czar Gamzu’s traffic light plan dictated that cities in the red category be placed on lockdown but then the Haredi objected with harsh letters targeting Netanyahu. Right before the audiences of this country, Bibi performed a remarkable U Turn and decided on nightly curfews instead in 40 towns including formerly green lit Eilat.
He spent yesterday lambasting the opposition, calling them anarchic. This came after Israel Beyteinu Leader Avigdor Lieberman told the Israeli public to not follow the new regulations but rather for each to follow basic common sense for the government regulations are all politically motivated.
The country is running without a budget for close to two years now, the quality of service is declining. The country is plagued in mass uncertainty, especially with a closure possibly planned for the upcoming High Holidays. Departments run themselves, with erratic guidelines that constantly change. When the political echelon needs to intervene and make a decision, indecision is the frequent outcome, leading to erratic, often non rational decision making. The political class is grapped with almost a sense of “fear” of the electorate, or of their own petty political interest. No-one knows truly what tomorrow will bring, making planning increasingly impossible. What will happen next month, based on the current reality, is anyone’s wildest guess.
With all due respect to the “great leader” Netanyahu, Israel IS now in “anarchy”. The anarchy is led by you, our great leader. You have turned a country that two years ago was truly impressive and improving in most regards to a country that if not corrected will more closely resemble our neighbors. What does it matter if we have peace with Abu Dhabi, with all the strategic and future financial benefits, if there is no state budget? Over a quarter of Israelis are struggling without work, such common news that it no longer makes the news. Does the great leader go to bed snug and sound knowing that Israel has gone from one of the most efficient countries in the world in fighting Corona to one of the worst in the course of six months? No this is not the opposition’s fault our great leader. You as our leader are responsible.
Election polls constantly show that the great leader will likely be re-elected if elections were called. The Israeli public is stuck in a trance, not knowing who to turn to lead this ship of state. However, more and more Israelis, even among the right-wing who form the majority of this country, are becoming disillusioned. This is shown by the meteoric rise of Yamina leader Naftali Bennett in the polls. There is a reason why leaders need to be replaced every so often in a democracy for leaders become accustomed to power and start to care more about power itself than about the masses who elected them. The signs are all around, with the great leader on trial for corruption based charges, an extremely ineffective government, and decision making based increasingly on calculations on how it will affect him rather than the country as a whole.
There comes a point when domestic politics take precedent to impressive foreign policy schemes. US President Donald Trump, for all the good he has done for Israel, cannot bring food to the Israeli table, cannot heal the sick, make wine out of water, and walk on water. What we are seeing here is increasingly scary, a country that is increasingly leaderless in a time when Israel truly NEEDS a leader to set things right.
If one truly values this country, the beautiful miracle of the Zionist story building a thriving state here out of the desert, the state is increasingly in danger. If one truly loves Israel, lets find a way to put a true leader on the helm that will care about the people of this country.
The High Holidays begin next week with the future well being of this country on the line. The longer we wait, and the longer Coronavirus is mismanaged, the harder it will be to change course. May it be our New Year’s resolution to end this leadership anarchy NOW for the good of the state.
