Canadian Police Wrongly Arrest Man

At about 7:30 pm, 2 March 2025, an incident has raised concerns over Alberta, Canada’s Edmonton City Police and mental health team practices and communication failures. In a distressing turn of events tonight, Edmonton City Police and their mental health team allegedly assaulted and arrested Ben Thomas, after responding to a call from Mr. Thomas himself regarding threats of blackmail by his mentally ill brother-in-law, Justin Roger Ouimet. Mr. Thomas had told his mother only minutes earlier about what had happened in the early hours, and that he had only wanted to help his brother-in-law get the mental health assistance needed at a local hospital.
The incident transpired in the early hours of March 2, 2025, when Mr. Thomas allegedly contacted the police to report his brother-in-law’s alleged aggressive behavior. Mr. Ouimet, who has intermediate autism, OCD, a lengthy mental health history, and a history of violence and abuse towards his wife, allegedly became loud and angry after a broken vacuum failed to function in the early hours of the morning. In an attempt to get help for Mr. Ouimet, allegedly tensions escalated when Mr. Thomas’ sister, in a fit of anger, punched Mr. Thomas in the face.
Upon arrival, over allegedly sixteen hours later, due to alleged negligence in communication and record sharing, allegedly the police and mental health team wrongly identified Mr. Thomas as having mental health issues. This misidentification was exacerbated by a prior incident where Mr. Thomas was mistakenly held at Edmonton’s Royal Alexander Hospital due to a mix-up with another person’s medical records, when he was there for something completely different. Mr. Thomas got a lawyer involved and it was shown that the doctors concerned wrongfully sectioned Mr. Thomas based on records that were not his.
The police, adhering to their typical protocol, made assumptions that led to further distress. Mr. Thomas, who was allegedly forced to the ground by Edmonton City Police officers, making his nose bleed, was threatened with being tasered and subsequently charged with assaulting an officer when he tried to prevent the tasering. Despite being informed by Mrs. Ouimet that Mr. Thomas has a heart condition, the police proceeded with their aggressive actions. The police and mental health team also spoke to Mr. Thomas’ mother who advised them of the facts, but they allegedly refused to listen and had already decided what story to tell.
Mrs. Ouimet alleges that the police already had a taser pointing to Mr. Thomas’ chest. This suggests that the police allegedly intended to cause Mr. Thomas serious harm, if not death, knowing that Mr. Thomas has a heart problem. When Mrs. Ouimet tried to leave her own bedroom, a police mental health therapist allegedly prevented Mrs. Ouimet from leaving her own bedroom into her own home. This suggests alleged forceable confinement by the alleged therapist, which is a criminal offense. Mrs. Ouimet was terrified that her brother was going to die and wanted to throw herself in front of the taser to prevent her brother allegedly being murdered by police. Mrs. Ouimet, an Ashkenazi Jew, is already to frightened to go out in the city because of increasing crime and violence, as well as hatred towards Jews.
This incident highlights ongoing issues with communication failures and the handling of mental health calls by the Edmonton City Police and adult mental health teams connected to the police service, reflecting a broader concern across Canadian police forces. Previous reports, including an article by Macleans Magazine, have criticized the RCMP and other police units for relying on gossip, rumors, and assumptions to maintain records, often shared with employers and other parties, causing undue harm to innocent individuals.
Mr. Thomas’ alleged wrongful arrest and the subsequent events are part of a concerning pattern of alleged police missteps that demand urgent attention and reform. The police also allege that he had alleged crack pipes and crack in his pocket. However, given the alleged claims that police turned the other cheek in cases where cannabis was being smoked in an apartment in West Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and did nothing, before Prime Minister Trudeau legalized it, though the entire resident hallway was reeking of it, the question remains, did the police plant this in Mr. Thomas’ pocket just to punish Mr. Thomas because he is the son of a British-Canadian Jew or because of the on-going racism experienced by Mr. Thomas and his family since being in Canada?
Mr. Thomas is currently being held against his will at the Royal Alexander Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta, under alleged trumped up mental health allegations by the police mental health team that attended with the Edmonton City Police. All this suffering for a man who was just trying to help his mentally ill brother-in-law. Mr. Thomas had just started a new job with Office Depot in Edmonton, but it is not yet known if he will be able to get to work on time. Mr. Thomas’ family said that they will be assisting Mr. Thomas in seeking legal redress and compensation for the assault, wrongful mental health arrest, trauma caused, false allegations, and potentially for the loss of a job that he worked so hard to get. Mr. Thomas is a student journalist, who was hoping to save money to go to Ukraine to cover the war there.
This isn’t the first time Edmonton City Police have used excessive force, violence, and swarming against members of the public in Alberta, Canada, during arrests. In 2017, 15 officers swarmed a 21-year-old man to arrest him, leaving the man with noticeable facial injuries. A review was made in April 2023, finding three officers guilty of excessive use of force, but police officers committing such crimes are reviewed by their own members and never named. These police were given only 35 hours of community service. This alone raises the question as whether Canadian police are not law enforcement officers, but alleged thugs allowed to abuse their power and not be held to a higher standard than the average citizen. It is no wonder that Canada’s drift into dictatorship didn’t just begin with PM Justin Trudeau’s government, but has been building over decades.
