The COVID-19 vaccine is an mRNA vaccine. It introduces a protein that is the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. This protein is taken up by dendritic cells, which express the spike protein on their surface, move to a lymph node, and stimulate B cells to make antibodies.
Yes, it’s as simple as that.
But there are many who are refusing to accept this life-saving vaccine. They do not want to let an “unknown” substance into their bodies.
There are a number of issues here. Much is made of our “rights”, a rather meaningless catchphrase. As the famed American jurist Oliver Wendell Holmes might have said (there are several contestants for the origin of this remark) ….. Your right to swing your fist ends where my nose begins.
I, personally, like the colour red and see it as an invitation to proceed. But I am forced to go with the majority and, for the public good, stop for a red traffic light.
Many of us allow all sorts of strange and unknown substances into our bodies, usually on a daily basis. They are known by their rather misleading generic name — food.
Have you looked at the labels? How many times have you seen a discreet “May contain preservatives”? Perhaps a more realistic warning would be “Most certainly does contain a large number of preservatives.”
Most of these preservatives are complex chemical agents that have been developed over the years. There are some traditional, natural, preservatives – salt, sugar, vinegar, and citrus juice, but these are not popular with food manufacturers as they are usually more expensive.
We should ask, are these preservatives intended to preserve the food or the health of the consumer?
We may all have said at some time or other — Heaven preserve us. Perhaps we should now exclaim — Sodium Benzoate preserves us!
Of course, it is easy to refuse the Covid-19 vaccination. It is not so easy to avoid the innumerable chemical additions to what we eat.
Some will go to almost unnatural lengths to eat “naturally”.
There are vegetarians who do not eat meat, mostly out of respect for sentient life. And at the next level, the lacto-vegetarians who, in addition to refusing meat, will not eat eggs, although dairy products such as milk, cheese, yogurt, and butter are acceptable.
The lacto-vegetarians have a sub-group, the ovo-lacto vegetarians who will go for the occasional egg.
The vegans, started in 1944 by a small group of vegetarians who got their name by removing the ‘etari’ from vegetarian, go even further and will not exploit animals in any way, be it for food, clothing, or any other purpose.
So, we can, perhaps, understand the reluctance of the vegetarians, the lacto-vegetarians, the ovo-lacto vegetarians and the vegans, to getting the Covid-19 vaccination. But for the rest of the population, quite happy to shovel who knows what into their mouths, there is no excuse.
For the sake of their elderly parents, their children, their neighbours and friends, they should get vaccinated — now.
