For years, Bernie Sanders had been fulminating against the millionaires and billionaires rigging society, elections, Washington and the rest of political life.
What he failed to say, year after year, for the last three years, is that he now belonged to the millionaires too. Why the silence?
And he also changed his mantra. He now preaches against the constant power grab of the billionaires and the multi-billionaires. Are the millionaires suddenly off the hook?
He had to show us his tax returns. Instead of immediately saying: “Guys, before I produce them, I need to confess something which I’ve not been telling you and I’m sorry,” he kept silent and postponing their publication.
But now we all know.
And now he got really defensive. “I’m not going to feel bad or apologize for having written two well-selling books.” Now he earned his millions? Do some deserve more money per hour or effort than others?
O, now suddenly Capitalism works, when it works for him? Now he’s entitled to this crazy amount per hour salary for the easy, clean, safe and pleasant work of sitting on a chair and writing a book or two?
From Socialist to salon Socialist because of a few bucks? How vicious the lure of money!
Why doesn’t he donate these revenues, which he doesn’t need next to his Senate salary, to a good cause or two? Why doesn’t he lower the price of his books?
In the Senate, he said that Trump’s tax cuts are unfair and only good for the rich. But he used these cuts to cut the amount of taxes he paid! He defended himself saying that he didn’t use every loophole in the book.
When asked about that, he gave a really Trumpian answer: Why don’t you ask such questions to Trump? That’s now his reference for ethics?
The always honest Sanders, always speaking about a fair society for all, has lost it. Just because of a few nickels.
Someone went to a rabbi with a riddle. Why are rich people so selfish? The rabbi said: look out of the window; what do you see? The man said: people passing by, the market. Now look in the mirror; what do you see? Myself. And the only difference is, the rabbi explained, that the window is glass and the mirror is glass with a paper-thin layer of silver behind it.
Now, I’m not saying that Sander’s integrity must be a thing of the past. I see no reason why Bernie would or could not repent. But he should.
Full disclosure: I wish a democratic socialist on the US; to give its workers rights that got established in Europe in the previous century but passed by the US. But I dread the idea of an anti-Zionist US president — dare I say — an anti-Jewish US president. (He called our government “rightwing — dare I say racist” — without explanation. I will explain. One can’t love women if one is against feminism. One can’t love Jews if one is against Zionism.)
