To the American President-Elect Donald Trump, “ISIS” clearly means two things. The first, that ISIS must be vanquished, destroyed, eliminated from off the face of the earth. These are only a few of the verbs fit for print. The second and most appealing is that “ISIS” for Mr. Trump stands for “I Support Israeli Security”. And he means it.
Whatever Americans may think of the recent election victory, there is no doubt that the President-Elect has long been a strong friend and a staunch supporter of the State of Israel.
Currently he is working feverishly to put together his Cabinet for the new administration which will commence on 20 January 2017. Most of those already named and many still being considered are our friends. The appointment of Stephen Bannon as chief strategist at the White House is still an open question.
Most of the Jewish organizations in the United States have campaigned against Bannon’s appointment. Letters and petitions have circulated widely through the Jewish world in America urging Mr. Trump to re-think the appointment of an individual who is supported by white supremecists, the Ku Klux Klan and the battalions of anti-blacks and anti-Semites.
Mr. Bannon himself declares that while he is indeed a nationalist, he is not an anti-Semite. He has visited Israel on several occasions and claims to support Israel’s security measures. In his professional career as editor of Breitbart News, he was surrounded by Jews and to my knowledge none of them have remarked on his alleged anti-Semitism.
The well-known Jewish American jurist, Alan Dershowitz, has written in leading newspapers and has spoken publicly in support of the Bannon appointment, decrying claims of anti-Semitism.
Not withstanding the turmoil at Trump Towers in New York, it appears that Mr. Trump has surrounded himself with wise counsel and so far as indicated, his choices are very pro-Israel. It is a far cry from the Obama administration’s cool relationship with Israel.
We will be watching with diligent attention the new president’s acts and decrees upon assuming his seat in the Oval Office. 2017 may prove to be one of the best years for Israel’s relationship with her American ally. And, if as suspected, he appoints former Governor Mike Huckabee to be the new American ambassador to Israel, we may yet witness the coming of moshiach (the chosen messiah). Israel has no better and loving friend than Mike Huckabee.
Nevertheless, politics being what they are and promises made being unfulfilled, we need to be wary and cautious, bearing in mind the Hebrew proverb “Chabdehu v’chashdehu”… Respect and Suspect.
In the meantime all that is left for us to do is to applaud Mr. Trump’s version of ISIS……
“I Support Israeli Security.” Ken yehi ratzon. So may it be.
