In this week’s parashah, we have a case of the blasphemer.
|וַיֵּצֵא, בֶּן-אִשָּׁה יִשְׂרְאֵלִית, וְהוּא בֶּן-אִישׁ מִצְרִי, בְּתוֹךְ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיּנִָּצוּ, בַּמַּחֲנֶה, בֶּן הַיִּשְׂרְאֵלִית וְאִישׁ הַיִּשְׂרְאֵלִי||And the son of an Israelitish woman, whose father was an Egyptian, went out among the children of Israel; and the son of the Israelitish woman and a man of Israel strove together in the camp. (Lev 24:10)|
The obvious question is: Is this blasphemer considered Israel?
At the simple, plain level of the text, he “went out” among the children of Israel, hence he was considered one of the children of Israel, at the surface.
Based on rabbinical Halacha, he was considered full-ledged Jewish due to his matrilineal affiliates, for he was the son of an Israelitish woman.
Based on Karaite Halacha, he was considered a gentile, for his father was Egyptian.
According to the rabbinical opinion, while he was considered Jewish, he was nonetheless rejected from the encampment of Israel because the tribal affiliate is according to the fathers (Num 2:34).
The problem is that how could a Jewish boy, based on rabbinical Halacha, be denied a place to stand within the camps of Israel based on Torah?
A related question is where did the Erev Rav עֵרֶב רַב (the mixed multitude) camp, which according to the rabbis were considered converts?
Where Did The Erev Rav Camp
At the time of Exodus, the children of Israel were numbered about 600,000:
|וַיִּסְעוּ בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל מֵרַעְמְסֵס סֻכֹּתָה, כְּשֵׁשׁ-מֵאוֹת אֶלֶף רַגְלִי הַגְּבָרִים, לְבַד מִטָּף||And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, beside children. (Ex 12:37)|
Only then was the Erev Rav mentioned:
|וְגַם-עֵרֶב רַב, עָלָה אִתָּם, וְצֹאן וּבָקָר, מִקְנֶה כָּבֵד מְאֹד.||And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, even very much cattle. (Ex 12:38)|
It is obvious that the Erev Rav was not numbered with the children of Israel.
On the first day of the second year in the wilderness, the children of Israel encamped according to the father’s house, numbered exactly 603,550:
|אֵלֶּה פְּקוּדֵי בְנֵי-יִשְׂרָאֵל, לְבֵית אֲבֹתָם: כָּל-פְּקוּדֵי הַמַּחֲנֹת לְצִבְאֹתָם–שֵׁשׁ-מֵאוֹת אֶלֶף וּשְׁלֹשֶׁת אֲלָפִים, וַחֲמֵשׁ מֵאוֹת וַחֲמִשִּׁים||These are they that were numbered of the children of Israel by their fathers’ houses; all that were numbered of the camps according to their hosts were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty. (Num 2:32)|
It can be derived from here that the Erev Rav was not numbered, hence they were not considered as the children of Israel. As to where did they camp, the only logical conclusion is that the Erev Rac camped outside the camp, the concept is that of the husk enwrapping the fruit.
Process of Separation
Israel represents the first in thought and last in action, the end product of God. The making of Israel is “not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:13).
Blood is by birth (lineage), will of flesh is by circumcision (of the flesh), will of man is by effort and strength, the gematria:
751 is the gematria of Ishmael ben Abraham יִשְׁמָעֵאל בֶּן-אַבְרָהָם, the prototype of the “son of flesh”, for he was the son of Abraham (by blood), was circumcised (by flesh), and “his hand will be against every man” (Gen 16:12) which is strength.
The three fathers of Israel are Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, each had produced dross in their generations and must be purified to produce Israel.
Any process of purification would involve multiple stages of separation of impurity. The parable is that of sowing the seed, as it is written:
|…The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field. But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way… Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn. (Mat 13:24-30)|
The first stage is the separation of the tare from the wheat. The tare looks like the wheat but it does not bear good fruit. Tare in Talmudic Hebrew is זוּנִים, as in zonah זוֹנָה, harlot. This is symbolized by Ishmael being the “son of flesh” from Abraham must be separated from the “son of promise”, Isaac. This stage of separation is done by “gathering” לֶקֶט, as it is written:
|As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. (Mat 13:40)|
The second stage is the separation of the stubble from the grain by threshing. The stubble is part of the wheat but is not edible therefore must be discarded.
Esau being the son of Isaac must be separated from Jacob, Esau is the stubble, as it is written:
|וּבֵית עֵשָׂו לְקַשׁ||…and the house of Esau for stubble…(Ob 1:18)|
The Hebrew word Kash קַשׁ actually mean gather, stubble is actually straw תֶּבֶן which is what the children of Israel were subject to while they were in Egypt:
|וַיָּפֶץ הָעָם, בְּכָל-אֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם,לְקֹשֵׁשׁ קַשׁ, לַתֶּבֶן||So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw. (Ex 5:12)|
The third stage is the separation of the husk (chaff) from the grain. This is done by winnowing, as it is written:
|Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. (Mat 3:12)|
The Erev Rav became attached to the children of Jacob in Egypt and came out with the children of Israel as the time of Exodus. The Erev Rav must be separated from Israel through the Holy Spirit (wind blowing).
|Erev Rav||עֵרֶב רַב||474|
The above three stages are actually four, the fourth stage is sifting which can be considered part of the third stage, for the goal is to remove the chaffs.
The final product is Israel, the chaff at the collectively level is Amalek, the epitome of impurity. The gematria of Israel times 4 (representing the 4 stages) plus the gematria of Amalek (spelled out) is exactly 2634.
|Israel x 4||יִשְׂרָאֵל||541 x 4|
|Amalek (spelled out)||עין מם למד קוף||470|
The average number of the three stages of separation is:
2634 / 3 = 878
878 is exactly the gematria of Mashiach spelled out in full, this comes to teach us the separation is administered through the hands of Mashiach:
|Spelling out||מם שין יוד חית||878|
The sum of the three stages of impurity is:
|Erev Rav||עֵרֶב רַב||474|
1301 is exactly the gematria of כִּי עַם-קְשֵׁה-עֹרֶף אַתָּה, “for you’re a stiff-necked people” (Ex 33:3).
The Four Stages
The three stages are actually four, specifically:
- Gathering, as it is written:
|וְהָיָה בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא, יַחְבֹּט יְהוָה מִשִּׁבֹּלֶת הַנָּהָר עַד-נַחַל מִצְרָיִם;וְאַתֶּם תְּלֻקְּטוּ לְאַחַד אֶחָד, בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל
|And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall beat off from the channel of the river unto the stream of Egypt, and ye shall be gathered one by one, O ye children of Israel. (Isaiah 27:12)|
- Threshing, as it is written:
|הִנֵּה שַׂמְתִּיךְ, לְמוֹרַג חָרוּץ חָדָשׁ–בַּעַל, פִּיפִיּוֹת; תָּדוּשׁ הָרִים וְתָדֹק, וּגְבָעוֹת כַּמֹּץ תָּשִׂים||Behold, I will make thee a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth: thou shalt thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and shalt make the hills as chaff. (Isaiah 41:15)|
- Winnowing, as it is written:
|תִּזְרֵם וְרוּחַ תִּשָּׂאֵם, וּסְעָרָה תָּפִיץ אוֹתָם; וְאַתָּה תָּגִיל בַּיהוָה בִּקְדוֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל תִּתְהַלָּל||Thou shalt fan them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the whirlwind shall scatter them; and thou shalt rejoice in the LORD, thou shalt glory in the Holy One of Israel. (Isaiah 41:16)|
- Sifting, as it written:
|כִּי-הִנֵּה אָנֹכִי מְצַוֶּה, וַהֲנִעוֹתִי בְכָל-הַגּוֹיִם אֶת-בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל, כַּאֲשֶׁר
יִנּוֹעַ בַּכְּבָרָה, וְלֹא-יִפּוֹל צְרוֹר אָרֶץ
|For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all the nations, like as corn is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth. (Amos 9:9)|
888 is the gematria of “salvation of our God”, יְשׁוּעַת אֱלֹהֵינוּ, which salvation (Yeshua) involves four stages, as presently discussed.
The Blasphemer and the Gatherer
There is an apparent parallel between the blasphemer and the stick gatherer in Num 15:32:
- Both men were brought to Moses for judgment;
- Both men were put in the ward because Moses did not know what would be the judgment;
- Both judgments were pronounced by God;
- Both men were stoned to death outside the camp by the people;
The blasphemer is called מְקַלֵּל in Hebrew, and the stick gatherer is called מְקֹשֵׁשׁ in Hebrew, it is immediately apparent that the two root words follow the same pattern, letter Kuf followed by two double letters.
The root word of blasphemer קלל also means stick, which is a technique employed by Jacob in his mass production of flocks.
|וַיַּצֵּג, אֶת-הַמַּקְלוֹת אֲשֶׁר פִּצֵּל בָּרְהָטִים, בְּשִׁקְתוֹת הַמָּיִם—אֲשֶׁר תָּבאֹןָ הַצֹּאן לִשְׁתּוֹת לְנֹכַח הַצֹּאן וַיֵּחַמְנָה בְּבֹאָן לִשְׁתּוֹת.||And he set the rods which he had peeled over against the flocks in the gutters in the watering-troughs where the flocks came to drink; and they conceived when they came to drink. (Gen 30:38)|
Similarly, the root word of the stick-gatherer קשש also means stubble, i.e. the impurity that must be separated.
The difference in gematria of these two characters is:
540 is exactly the gematria of Israel יִשְׂרָאֵל less 1, meaning they appear on the surface as the children of Israel, but are not Israel, “for they are not all Israel, which are of Israel” (Rom 9:6).
The sum of their gematria is:
The average number is 940/2 = 470, which is exactly the gematria of Amalek, the epitome of impurity, when the four letters are spelled out in full, as follows:
|Spelling out||עין מם למד קוף||470|
In each story, the name blasphemer and the gatherer each appeared 2 times, for a total of 4 times, adding 4 to the gematria of 470, the new gematria is 474, exactly that of Erev Rav עֵרֶב רַב.
The children of Israel came out of Egypt with the mixed multitude, the Erev Rav, they look like Israel but are not Israel, they are in fact Amalek and therefore must be separated, threshed, winnowed, and sifted to produce the perfect Bride without blemish:
The gematria of Israel plus the ordinal number is 605, representing the true Israel:
|Sum of ordinal number||12 + 1 + 20 + 21 + 10||64|
605 is exactly the gematria of Israel (spelled out) being separated from her husk which is Amalek (spelled out), as follows:
|Israel||יִשְׂרָאֵל||יוד שין ריש אלף למד||1075|
|Amalek||עֲמָלֵק||עין מם למד קוף||470|
