Fact Check

Fact Check

It was disappointing for me to see yet another issue with reporting by the Wall Street Journal. As you will see below, the Journal repeated the myth that hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were forced to flee their homes during Israel’s War of Independence.  Below is my letter (unpublished) to the WSJ addressing this —

To the Editor:

In yesterday’s Journal, you published an article: “Palestinians Face Harrowing Hunt for Safety as War Intensifies”. The article made the following statement as fact: “In 1948, at the creation of the Israeli state, the family, like hundreds of thousands of other Palestinians, was forced to flee.” While many Palestinians were forced to flee, most fled on their own volition. These others fled to escape the ongoing hostilities (as most refugees do) or left at the instigation of Arab leaders who promised them the return to their homes once they were victorious over the fledgling Israeli state. The Middle East is fraught with enough divisiveness without the Journal spreading misinformation that adds fuel to that fire.
