G-d’s Master Plan – XXIII – Parshat Shoftim, The DNC And Three Minnesota Senators

The first words of Parshat Shoftim cry out to us about establishing a fair and just Judicial System, and having the ability to enforce laws, which in the case of Judaism is our Torah. America operates under a different set of laws and statutes, which became crystal clear during the past two years.

Watching some of the speeches at the DNC this past week made me think back in history that involved two famous Minnesota politicians – Walter Mondale and Hubert H. Humphrey.

Walter Mondale’s nomination of a woman for Vice President during the 1984 DNC named Geraldine Ferraro  was the first time a woman had been nominated for either President or Vice-President.

Hubert Humphrey’s introduction of Civil Rights legislation to the 1948 DNC was also a first.

Both men accomplished great things for Minnesota and America.

Amy Klobuchar

Amy spoke on the first day of the DNC and I just thought it interesting that she represents the only person among all those speakers to have worked with Walter Mondale while having known the many Minnesota and other lawmakers to have worked with HHH.

I previously pointed out that Amy was given the honor to have spoken at the unveiling of a statue in HHH’s honor in Minnesota. Among those speakers present was former President Bill Clinton who also spoke at the DNC this week.

You have been watching the 2020 DNC Convention without any mention of Hubert Humphrey

Perhaps you would like to now hear from people who knew Hubert Humphrey the best.

A recording was played of Hubert Humphrey who said at the 1948 DNC – “The time has arrived in America for the Democratic Party to get out of the shadow of states’ rights and walk forthrightly into the bright sunshine of human rights’’.

It remains to be seen if the Democratic Party will be able to meet the challenges of 2020 and beyond.

It is not by chance that for this whole week, the DNC has taken place based in the same City of Milwaukee that Israel Prime Minister Golda Meir called home. Hubert Humphrey loved Israel and Israel loved him as well and I know Golda did meet with HHH.

Hopefully one day the Democratic Party will, “Wake Up, Wake Up” as it says in the Haftorah of Parshat Shoftim and take a few lessons from HHH about Israel. American Jewry is watching back home and here in the country I now call home.
