Getting Away With Murder

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon this week urged Syrian President Bashar Assad to take “bold and decisive measures before it’s too late” and called on members of the world body to unite and take “coherent measures” with regard to Syria, the AP reported.  The AP reported those were among Ban’s “strongest criticism yet of the Syrian government”

Assad must have gotten quite a chuckle out of that.  He knows the UN won’t do anything serious because he has proteksia on the Security Council.  Russia and China have been running interference for him all along.  U.S. Ambassador Robert Ford posted comments on his embassy’s Facebook page saying there is no question that when it comes to reform Assad is all talk and no action.  His only action, in fact, is the slaughter of those demanding reform.

The Syrian dictator knows he can safely ignore anything coming out of the United Nations so long as his enablers are protecting him.

They share responsibility for the ongoing violence because they are keeping Assad’s killing machine going, not unlike – though on a much smaller scale – the so-called neutrals like Switzerland, Sweden and Spain did for the Third Reich.  Read more about it in my Jerusalem Post column.
