The Republican Party in Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ district is raffling off a Glock 23 handgun to raise money to defeat her if she recovers enough from gunshot wounds from another – less powerful — Glock to run again next year.
"Get yourself a new Glock 23 .40 cal handgun for just 10 bucks – if your name is drawn. That’s right, for just 10 dollars this gun could be yours," reads the ad by the Pima County Republican Party. Giffords was seriously wounded and six others were killed on January 8; Jared Lee Loughner has been charged in the crime.
The Pima County GOP newsletter said the raffle is intended to raise money for get-out-the-vote efforts in the district Giffords represents, according to The Hill.
Sales of Glocks rose in the immediate aftermath of Giffords’s shooting. In fact, Giffords herself owns a Glock. "I have a Glock 9-millimeter, and I’m a pretty good shot," she told the New York Times in 2010.
Democratic county chairman Jeff Rogers called the raffle "a stunning lack of judgment and decency at a time when the community is still grieving and healing." Brian Miller, the immediate past GOP county chair, also questioned the decision to raffle off a Glock.
