Hillsong United, Christian Music, and Jewish Music

My maternal grandmother, Lulluree, who was born in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1915, raised me to love faith-based music. In particular, my grandmother loved music by Andrae Crouch; songs such as “The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power” and “Soon and Very Soon”.

We also listened to traditional Christian songs such as “This Little Light of Mine”, “Oh, How I Love Jesus!”, and “Amazing Grace”.

When I was 4 years old, my grandmother and I watched the religious TV show “I Believe in Miracles” with Kathryn Kuhlman, who was a faith healer. This was my favorite TV show. I felt an “electric” connection to Kuhlman.

While I lived with my grandmother, she did not allow me to listen to secular or non-religious music.

My grandmother passed away in 1987. After her passing, I became strongly interested in Jewish tradition and the Jewish faith. I converted to Judaism while I was a college student. I then fell in love with Jewish music.

The music and touching stories of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach inspired me. I also love music by Avraham Fried and Ohad Moskowitz. When I visit modern synagogues, I hear music by the late Debbie Friedman such as “Miriam’s Song”.

While living in B’nai Brak, Israel in 2002, I was introduced to the music of Yaakov Shwekey and his “Shomati” album. I immediately fell in love with songs such as: “Rachem”, ”Chosuf”, “Meheira”, and “Shechechiyanu”. Shwekey almost immediately became one of my favorite performers.

After moving back to the United States, I again began listening to some Christian music such as “Hillsong United”, “Hillsong Worship”, Hillsong Young & Free”, “Kari Jobe”, “Jesus Culture”,  “Chris Tomlin”, “Worship Mob”, “Kim Walker-Smith”, “Kirk Franklin”, and “Tasha Cobb”. I fell in love with the song “Holy Spirit” by “Francesca Battistelli”.

Inspired by my Christian upbringing and my love of Judaism, I was inspired to write new song lyrics under my stage name as the rapper, “21 Rothschild”:

The God of Israel: What a Healing Name

(Inspired by “What a Beautiful Name” by Hillsong; “Fierce” by Jesus Culture”, and “Healer” by Kari Jobe)

“God has no rival

God has no equal

Now and forever, the God of Israel reigns

God is the Kingdom

God is the Glory

God is the name above all names

God’s healing existed from the beginning.

With healing angels serving God Most High.

God’s healing hand embraces Creation.

For the benefit of every nation.

Now revealed for our everlasting life.

What a healing name is the God of Israel.

What wonderful healing exists in God’s world.

Like a tidal wave

Healing over me

Rushing in to meet me here

Israel’s love is fierce

Like a healing hurricane

That I can’t explain

Tearing through the atmosphere

Israel’s love is fierce

I believe God is my healer

I believe God is all I need

God is more than enough for me

Yes, the God of Israel is all I need”

The End
