Don’t blame the virus. Face it. China, less than 5,000 deaths, the US more than 180,000 deaths and counting (projection: 340,000).
China: lockdown until it passed. The US:
Money & Nationalism: Capitalist competition who should produce the infection kits. It took months to work out and still gave worse results than the pre-existing German one.
Freedom: No one tells us what to do, where to go, when to congregate, when to wear a face mask. I’d rather die. And so they did.
Misinformation: Freedom to spread fake news. The US president tops anyone.
Health care: It’s economically better not to give everyone health care, not to give workers pay for sick days, to have businesses run health care and the pharmaceutical industry, to only care for the privileged.
Science: Freedom to doubt climate change, environmentalists, and infectious disease specialists. Everyone is a professor.
Religion: Religious nutcases who proclaim that G^d will protect them better without doctors.
This is not the only surprising loss for the advanced society.
Most of the most famous cities in the world are a great place for viruses to spread. New York City a prime example. But the rural world got another ‘victory’ coming.
Melting Poles’ ice will sink most of the most famous cities in the world within a century. Buying a house there (or a mansion) is like building on ice in the winter, only to be surprised you don’t have a place to live anymore in the summer.
In other words: Progress is not an always guaranteed winner. It often has additional weaknesses build-in that could make it a loser. No good news for lazy comfort and entertainment-seeking people. Better be an activist. Then you may stop disasters from happening. And in any case, it’s a more uplifting life to live.
