Knowing the Right Path Forward
Sometimes when we don’t know what to do, we reach for the most extreme solutions because nothing else seems viable. And while some circumstances do require more aggressive intervention, there are a myriad of support options that fall somewhere in between, if you just know how to find them or whom to ask.
Baruch’s* mom decided it was time to call us when she had reached the point of concern over her 12 year-old son’s behavior that she was considering whether he needed a treatment or school program out of her home state.
Baruch had been struggling with severe anger over the prior few months, as well as with listening to his parents and getting along with his siblings. The house was filled with constant tension and even fear, and Baurch’s mother felt overwhelmed, as she had tried everything she could think of to alleviate the situation and did not know what else to do.
Our case manager was able to calm Baruch’s mother down and provide education and guidance on how to diffuse the immediate crisis. He provided referrals and resources that included therapy suggestions for both her and Baruch, several book recommendations, and local support groups for parents. The mom was able to get her son into therapy within a few days; and she called us after just four weeks to note how much better Baruch was doing with his emotions and interacting with his family. Baruch and his therapist are working on developing coping skills, emotion regulation, and developing a plan for triggers when they arise.
Baruch’s mother is grateful to have called Amudim before making the life altering decision of sending her adolescent son away, when in this particular case, the support he needs is far closer to home. She called again a month ago to specifically express how thankful she is that her family remains intact and that Baruch is receiving the love and assistance he requires to make it through this difficult stage.
If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Amudim is just a phone call away and here to help.
