People knew the Earth was round during the time of Columbus.
There are times when people hear the same lies enough time that it begins to take on a life of its own. They believe the lies to be factual with absolute certainty. There is no need to research the origin, since they do not have an interest in researching what they already know to be true.
As the story goes, Columbus tricked his Spanish benefactors into financing him with the promise of sailing east towards Asia. All of Western Civilization knew the world was flat and sailors would fall over the edge if they ventured too far from shore and the only way to reach Asia was to sail east. He was so convinced the world was round that he had to lie his way across the ocean to prove it.
Over 2,600 years ago, scientists and philosophers were already making note of their findings pointing to a round planet. By the third century B.C., no one educated throughout the history of Western Civilization believed the world was flat. From that moment on, every educated person throughout the history of Western Civilization held to the belief that Earth was anything other than round.
The disagreement Columbus had was not about a flat world, but his belief it was much smaller than the Earth turned out to be. It took him years of negotiation to convince Ferdinand II of Spain to fund his trip. The negotiation was not about the possibility of being wrong about a flat Earth, but of just how big around it was.
It was not until Washington Irving published The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus in 1828 that anyone believed the time of Columbus included the idea that less than 400 years had passed from the time everyone knew the world was flat. Irving embellished details when he wrote his story and was so convincing through his words, that they took on a life of their own.
The lie of Columbus proving to Western Civilization that the world is round is quite harmless. It does not take away from his discovery of a new continent to the Europeans. The Vikings may have beaten him to the land, but they never shared their information. This is one of the reasons they are so often left out of the history books regarding European discovery.
There are other lies that are far more insidious and far from harmless. People who hate are always searching for an excuse to hate. Lies are very convenient and they have no interest in determining the accuracy. All that matters to them is the justification the lies give to strengthen what they already feel.
Anti-Semitism is hatred of the Jews and the lies they cling to are flimsy at best. It is easy to search out the truth, but they will never seek truth. They are content to live in their world of misery and spread their venom to anyone willing to listen.
All Jews are wealthy is one of the more minor ones, but still held with the same hatred. There are Jews who are homeless, Jews living in abject poverty, Jews living in trailer parks, Jews who are middle class and some Jews are wealthy. There are some born to wealth and lose it all; while others are born into poverty and make something with their lives.
There are certainly other examples to use, but I keep these blogs short and every lie used to prove a point would take an entire book to write. Hated is used to dehumanize human beings. Jews are every bit as human as gentiles and those who hate Jews do not see the human being, but something far less than human.
To borrow from Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice:
Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions? Fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer as a Christian is? If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?
Hatred is blinding and having the same hands, organs and dimensions does not matter. All the lies, which can never be proven true, feeds a hatred that already exists. Not every Jew is wealthy, and most are far from being considered rich by any financial measure. Just as Columbus never set out to prove the world is round, Jews are every bit as human as gentiles and live in all spectrums of life as the gentiles.
For those who qualify under Right to Return in the United States, most cannot afford the plane ticket to Israel, let alone the means to stay. It has been estimated that as many as 20% of Jewish households in the United States makes less than $30,000 per year. This is close to the poverty level and the majority of those who make aliyah require financial assistance to do so.
Israel provides the plane tickets and other financial aspects for those who make aliyah when needed. The reason is aliyah could never be made any other way for the vast majority of those who qualify. If every Jew were rich, why would the state of Israel spend so much to assist anyone? The answer is quite simple. Most Jews are not rich.
The information on Columbus may open a few eyes, but my hope is the information on Jews opens a few hearts. Perhaps someone will read this and question their own motivations and search out the truth. After all, if not all Jews are rich and the vast majority of Jews fall well under the financial threshold to qualify as upper class, then does it not stand to reason other beliefs are also based on lies and should be questioned?
Truth should always be sought, even at the expense of one’s own personal belief system. For it is better to search out truth, than cling to lies. Human beings alone are capable of self-thought and self-reflection, but we must be prodded to do so due to our own intellectual laziness. It is easier to accept a lie than to seek the truth.
