Mark Carney Endangers Canadian Jews

Journalist Brian Lilley wrote back in March of this year labelling Canada’s new PM Mark Carney as a man who consistently lies even when he doesn’t need to. “It’s part of an ongoing pattern with Carney, lying about small things, he doesn’t need to lie about, things that can easily be checked.”[1] This is one of the disturbing characteristics of Carney’s personality. Even more disturbing however is Carney steering Canada, a typically centrist and inclusive country towards extremist values and an abandonment of Israel as an ally.

Since his infamous quote on June 6 calling Muslim values Canadian values, he has faced significant outrage and criticisms. “Indian-origin journalist Rupa Subramanya also joined the criticism, tweeting: “Islamic values are not Canadian values. And there ain’t nothing bigoted in saying that.”[2] On Twitter/X Catholic Canadians noted that Carney refused to mention the name of ‘Christ’ at Easter services but seems happy to promote another religion.

Carney’s election may have been fueled by Canadian fears of the second Trump presidency. Whether that was warranted or not is yet to be seen. There is no doubt however that he is intent on shaping Canada as an ally of the Muslim world. He doesn’t seem to be concerned whether Jewish people suffer because of his actions. Early on in his leadership, PM Justin Trudeau apologized for the “St. Louis Affair” when Jews sought refuge from Nazi Europe but were refused. However, this same tone isn’t represented in Carney’s narrative.

Carney appears intent to recognize a Palestinian state which is under the leadership of Hamas, a banned terrorist organization. If this is the case, Ottawa would be rewarding terrorism and the genocidal intent of this monstrous group which aims to destroy Israel. His appeasement of violence and offering glowing references to ‘Muslim values’, reveals Carney’s true nature and agenda. He and his government have abandoned Israel and Canada’s Jewish communities.

Carney is pushing Canada towards a fascist-like regime which would turn away from the democratic values supported by Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism, and Hinduism. As Israel fights for its survival as a sovereign state and Jewish people around the world, Canada is literally turning its back on us. His tears when he visited the Oct. 7 Exhibit in Toronto seem hollow and contrived. He has been virtually silent on the dangerous surge of antisemitism in Canada leaving us to feel angry and worried.

By aligning the country with values espoused by an international terrorist organization the PM sets a dangerous precedent not just for Israel-Canada relations but the country’s status as an ally for democracy. He empowers antisemitism, anti-Zionism, and raises the specter of a terrorist attack on Canadian soil. The people who would suffer would of course be Jewish Canadians.

In Khan Younis, Palestinian activists have been actively protesting Hamas. Instead of recognizing Israel’s role in empowering the Palestinian people Carney fails to even mention this pivotal moment in the Gaza crisis. Then the RCMP opens an investigation into the actions of Jews who went voluntarily to help fight in Gaza. “[…] why is Canada’s federal police force spending time and using resources to investigate Canadians who went to assist a foreign ally against a common enemy?”[3]

Carney has apparently forgotten that over 50 hostages are still held captive by Hamas in Gaza. He doesn’t call for their freedom, or a hostage deal, as he’s too busy cozying up to Hamas and its allies. Hamas has even thanked him openly on social media. This is dangerously close to adopting a federal policy of antisemitism and anti-Zionism.

We, the Jews of Canada and the world must stand up for ourselves and support Israel even if our PM is too weak and foolish as to turn away. Last night, Israel struck a huge blow in its well-balanced and purposeful attack on Iran to take out its nuclear threat. One of the most eloquent and fearless journalists from the UAE, Amjad Taha, posted this today: “Iranian women are celebrating because the regime that flogged them, raped them, killed their sons, and erased their names is finally being held to account. This is the same regime that spilled 2 million lives in Iraq, starved Yemen, launched chemical hell on Syrians, and armed Hamas to carry out the massacre of October 7th. Peace doesn’t grow in the soil of appeasement. It blossoms only after the weeds of terror are burned away.”[4] I urge PM Carney to read Amjad and his words. This is where we find clarity by turning away from terrorism not supporting it.

It’s the cheers rising from within Iran, not from palaces of power but from the prisons, kitchens, and graveyards of its victims. The same Islamist regime that once forced silence now watches its own” / X
