Might bad news stories help Israel ?

On a fairly regular basis many of the domestic news items as reported in the Israeli Press are distressing at best or downright depressing.

Having just returned from one of my frequent trips to Israel once again I had the pleasure of reading the hard copy press in addition to the various on line papers. I mused at length over their contents as I struggled to survive the Jerusalem heat.

Frequently one is left with the feeling of ” how could such a thing happen or what could they have been thinking ? ”   Similarly striking is the mass of in-depth commentary on such news items.
At first glance some of these might seem superfluous or run the risk of gloating. Indeed the thought occurs that the Chofetz Chaim would surely have had his work cut out for him !
However, such analysis does provide the opportunity to impart messages which at times go far beyond the initial event which prompted the news item.
The Israeli press, I believe, exhibits great restraint and, far from gloating or poking their adversaries in the eye with a sharp stick, has used such opportunities to not only inform their readers, but also to ‘ form ‘ their way of thinking.
By reading several newspapers, their related websites and other opinion postings one is easily able to put things in balance and perspective.
I once worked with a lady who in a loud voice would frequently announce that ‘one can learn as much from a bad boss or failed project as one could from a good boss or successful project!’. Though intended for then current management, the logic so expressed has stayed with me through the years.
Perhaps though not the initial intention, such journalistic coverage is thus able to play a very positive role in Israeli society.
