Overheard

The aroma at Aroma is enticing but less so than the gossip overheard at a nearby table

“Have you heard the latest news?” asks one.

“No”: replies the other. “What is it?”

“Well” says the first, “I heard that Netanyahu has made changes in his Last Will and Testament”.

“”Nu”, says his companion. “what changes could he possibly make now?”

“He says that in case he should die while in office, it is his will that his wife Sara replace him as prime minister until new elections are held.

“What’s new about that?” replies the other. “She has been our prime minister ever since he was first elected. She puts the words into his mouth, pulls the string, and his voice can be heard speaking her words”.

“That’s not new. Everyone in Israel has known about it for many years, “ says his friend. “When Sara says ‘Sit’, he sits. When she says ‘Jump’ he asks how high.”

“That may be true”, responds the first one, “but you haven’t heard the rest of it”.

“What more can there be?” asks the enlightened one.

“His Will further states that if Sara should die while in office, our son Yair should fill our shoes as the new prime minister”.

“Oy vey !!” shouts his friend, tipping his coffee cup onto the table. “When is the next flight to America? I can live with Trump but with Bibi’s no-good son…. it’s out of the question. Oy vey ! Oy va voy lanu. Elohim yaazor. Rachmanut” ! Woe are we. God help us. Have mercy !

“Don’t be in such a hurry to leave Israel”, replied his companion. “Smotrich, Zohar, Otzma and the Likud need a very good long rest. Our voters will take care of that”.

I had just finished drinking my cup of Aroma dark and sugarless, and I ordered a refill anxious to remain to overhear more of the conversation.

Regrettably the two rumor-mongers got up and left before I could be entertained by more “news”.

As it has often been said, “where there is a Will there is a way”. Or even more appropriate, to quote from the enlightened one “Oy vey !!

Yossi Beilin has written a brilliant article regarding the sad condition of our present and possible future leaders. It appeared in the May 24th edition of YISRAEL HAYOM” and is a MUST read.

The book-makers are hauling in bets from the public disillusioned ones. As for Bibi, “will he or won’t he”? Which by that, they mean “we know he is guilty. But will he or will he not be sentenced to prison?”

I am not a gambling man. I hate to lose. Every horse in a race is beautiful but only one can be a winner.

If a corrupt individual succeeds in flaunting the law and evading justice, I might do as one of the coffee drinkers at the next table asked. “When is the next flight to America? I can live with Trump but with Bibi junior…. it’s out of the question”.

I joined him with another double “Oy vey” !!!
