Parshat Chukat – חקת

The Attack of the Fiery Serpents
When the Israelites complained
and were ungrateful for the daily miracles
which G-d bestowed upon them in the desert,
fiery serpents attacked them
and forced them to repent.
Gratitude is the beginning of all religious service.
For this reason we begin the morning
by saying to G-d: מודה אני לפניך
thanking Him and showing gratitude
that He has restored our soul
to what otherwise would be a dead body.
