Pittsburgh to Israel: A Family’s Inspiring Journey

Joel and Tova Weinberg have built a life dedicated to family, community, and Jewish values—a legacy that has shaped the lives of their children, grandchildren, and now even a great-grandchild.

For many years, Joel served as the medical director at UPMC Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His role in pulmonary medicine was demanding, nearly a twenty-four-seven job that required his full commitment. With Tova’s unwavering support, Joel dedicated himself to his responsibilities, though it often meant limited time with his family. When Joel retired four years ago, he entered a new chapter, moving to Israel and continuing his work part-time as a consultant in cystic fibrosis at Beilinson Hospital in Tel Aviv. This transition has allowed him to spend more time with his children and grandchildren, actively participating in their lives and family milestones.

Tova’s impact has extended beyond her own family and deeply into the Jewish community. As one of America and Israel’s most prominent Jewish matchmakers, she has facilitated over three hundred successful matches, a remarkable achievement recognized in publications like the New York Times. Her role goes beyond introductions; she offers guidance and support, helping young people find meaningful connections and establish Jewish homes. Tova’s dedication has strengthened Jewish families across generations, building connections that keep communities thriving.

Joel and Tova’s values are evident in the lives of their children. All five of their children received a solid Jewish education at Hillel Academy of Pittsburgh, where they were grounded in Jewish tradition and learning. They went on to attend Yeshiva University for their undergraduate studies, furthering their commitment to Jewish values before pursuing their own professional paths. Joel and Tova encouraged each of them to make aliyah, and today, four of their children have built their lives and families in Israel. Their fifth child, currently residing in Detroit, is also considering the move. Joel and Tova’s guidance and support have created a close-knit, multi-generational family rooted in shared values and connection to Israel.

Reflecting on her children’s upbringing, Tova shared that she would tell them each night before bed, “We haven’t had Israel in 2000 years, and only now, in our generation, do we have it. You must be our anchor to get us there—if you’re there, we’ll be there.” This nightly message instilled in her children a profound love for Israel, teaching them that it is not only their heritage but the true homeland for the Jewish people. Today, her words resonate in the lives of her children, who have embraced this commitment and made Israel their home.

Recently, the Weinbergs celebrated the birth of their first great-grandchild, Shira’s daughter, Ahuva’s baby girl, marking a new generation in the family. This precious addition symbolizes the legacy of resilience, love, and Jewish continuity that Joel and Tova have built. Tova hopes their family’s journey will inspire others to consider making aliyah as well. “If we could do it when Joel was so involved in his work and never wanted to leave, anyone can,” she reflected.

The Weinbergs’ journey stands in remarkable contrast to the reality in many Jewish communities in America, where the Jewish population is gradually contracting, leaving only a small Orthodox nucleus in some cities. Their commitment to aliyah and to building a family in Israel is a path that few have taken, but it serves as an inspiring example. Their story encourages others to reflect on their own paths and consider the legacy they wish to leave.

By fostering deep connections and guiding their children and grandchildren, Joel and Tova have created a lasting legacy—one that enriches their family and strengthens the Jewish community for generations to come. Their example reminds us all of the power of family, faith, and the importance of creating a future grounded in shared values and love for Israel.
