Jesus before Pilate, with Pilate (portrayed not as a Roman but as a Jew, with uncut beard and sidecurls!) washing his hands, National Library of Wales, Wikipedia
The signet ring supposedly from the infamous Pontius Pilate has been found, anti-Zionist but archeologically adroit Haaretz was first to report. To say more, it was found 50 years ago but the text on it is finally figured out. It reads: ΠΙΛΑΤΟ – PILATO. There are two strange things about it.
1. The letters go clockwise. But, as we can see in the next picture, they should go counter-clockwise.
But they don’t:
This is a signet ring, so everything should be mirrored. But all the letters found are left-right symmetrical, so that’s why those seem un-mirrored.
The seals it makes should therefore look like this:
Now it reads counter-clockwise ΠΙΛΑΤΟ – PILATO.
2. Where’s the closing S? The capital S in Greek looks like this: Σ. PILATO needs an S in Greek (strangely, not in English: Pilate).
Classical languages, besides base Latin (Medical school) are all Greek to me but it seems that even nouns and names can change their endings to indicate: from that noun/name. So maybe that’s the case here. (If I’d claim that I don’t understand a thing about this, I would still be bragging.)
