Rav Ovadia: Raising the Pride of Sephardic Jews.

Rav Ovadia Yosef will be remembered as the man who raised the Jewish and ethnic and religious pride of Sehardic Jews to an irreversible level of dignity in Israeli society.

I say this as a fellow traveler of the Jerusalem Black Panthers in the early 1970’s, as a social worker in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, and as a reporter in Israel since 1987.

There was a time when Sephardim walked with a feeling of rejection and discrimination in Israeli society.

A leader with the stature of Rav Ovadia addressed that phenomenon. t.

The Sephardic self image in Israel is now one of pride

Rav Ovadia played a crucial role in that process.
