Remembering the miracles

Sometimes we don’t think about certain things, and they are stored in our memory banks, waiting for the moment when we recall and think about them.

These days, as we light the Chanukah candles, we remember G-d’s miraculous salvation, when the Macabees, who were far outnumbered, defeated their enemies. As we reflect on the miracles “in those days and in our time” (‘Al hanisim’ prayer), we see how, nowadays too, G-d is helping us, ensuring that our efforts to defeat our enemies are successful. And we realize that everything that happens, including support from Western powers, is orchestrated by Divine providence.

So if anyone demands that Israel should give away land, we answer that G-d, Who controls everything, instructs us in His Torah, that it’s dangerous to do so. And we remember what Hamas has clearly shown us, what intifadas have clearly shown us, and what terrorism emanating from the West Bank and encouraged by the PA — by educating children to hate, and giving money to families of slain terrorists — has clearly shown us, that giving away land is dangerous. By obeying G-d, and not giving away land, and showing the world that we fear no one but G-d, the whole world sees and realizes His awesome presence.

As the Torah states (Deuteronomy 28; 10), “All the nations of the earth will see that the Name of G-d is called upon you (by wearing tefillin (phylacteries) — as our sages explain) and they will fear you (the Jewish people).

We trust that G-d will continue to help us defeat our enemies, heal our wounds, and bring our Redemption with Moshiach now, so that our ancestors and loved ones will rise and rejoice with us. And we will sanctify His Name in the third and eternal Temple which will be rebuilt in Jerusalem, on His holy mountain, forever.

And we will remember G-d’s miracles, forever.
