The Best Gig EVER!
In June 1967 we took the Old City by storm. In June 2014 the Rolling Stones took us by storm!
The best rock n roll group in the world played Tel Aviv and forever more I can say I was there!
It was hotter than it’s been in a long time, throats were parched, there was no wind and no one cared because Mick Jagger, Ronnie Wood, Keith Richards and Charlie Watts were on stage performing in Israel.
It’s now official, Mick Jagger speaks better Hebrew than 90% of olim! His attempts to communicate with the crowd all the more delightful for the fact that they were entirely unnecessary.
My personal favorite moment however was when they played Get off of my Cloud. The song voted for by Israelis on the Rolling Stones website. In the wake of the song Mick said “yeah that was written in nineteen sixty…something”. The man has written so many incredible songs so effortlessly that he can’t even remember writing one of the greatest hits in rock n roll.
We Israelis get a lot of flack around the world and so do musicians who announce their intentions to play in Israel. It was perfect that the Stones came, played and seemed to have every bit as much fun doing so as the crowd who jammed in to see them. It was a night devoid of politics and filled with 100% pure entertainment!
On June 4th 2014, when the Rolling Stones played Tel Aviv, I was there. When Mick Jagger, rock God, spoke Hebrew he was speaking to me. I seized one of those moments that come along a handful of times in a person’s life to share a moment in time with 50,000 perfect strangers that we will all remember forever.
