The complete idiot’s guide to Mideast peace – part 133

Liberman urges ‘regional agreement’ with moderate Arabs | The Times of Israel   ‘Current Mideast situation makes separate peace deal with Palestinians impossible, foreign minister tells John Kerry’

The current Mideast situation does make a separate peace deal between Israelis and Palestinians impossible. Indeed, much the same can be said of all such ‘situations’ at any time in the past 66 years. So, whatever might be the thoughts of an actual deal being arranged and faithfully adhered to thereafter by each of the two sides, these would represent the most extraordinary triumph of hope over experience.

And yet, if actual peace is the intention of all those concerned, it’s an easy enough task to put into practice. All that’s required amounts to some modification of the current ‘situation,’ an evolutionary step away from the manner in which conventional peaces processes work and a certain willingness to take a few more risks in conditions where risk has always been a constant companion for both sides. Then the guarantee of optimum results, no matter what happens, becomes available to one and all. And, afterwards, this can include the full spectrum of humanity.
