Obama to Netanyahu: Immediate ceasefire

‘US President Barack Obama phones Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and urges an immediate ceasefire in the conflict with Hamas.’

Obama calls Netanyahu, urges immediate, unconditional ceasefire | The Times of Israel

Well, there you have it. An immediate ceasefire that is followed up by a cessation of hostilities as based on a previous ceasefire issued in 2012.

How can it possibly fail?

Somehow, after the events of the past three weeks, I just can’t see all this happening and, even if it did, does it really take us anywhere we haven’t been so many times before? With well over a thousand dead and the number of injured now expected to far exceed that, is a ceasefire going to be of much relevance in the overall scheme of things? Or is it just another stop-gap, a respite from conflict prior to the whole shooting-match being wound up once again and made ready for the next bloody phase of battle?

And, it we can’t hope for better than that, then should we bother at all?
