The complete idiot’s guide to Mideast peace – part 249
Abbas promises ‘surprise initiative’ to resolve conflict with Israel | The Times of Israel ‘ PA president says US will not approve of his new plan, jokes that it’s not declaring war on Israel’
Well, at least someone is still thinking about a solution and, unorthodox or not, that must be a good sign, especially in view of this protracted Gazan-Israeli fire-fight that’s now about to enter its 49th day.
I wonder just how much of a surprise this plan really is. To have any significant impact upon a conflict of such long duration, it must be exceptional in concept, detailed in design and sufficiently unique to stand out from all the other ‘solutions’ that have so far failed to make their mark. What are the odds it won’t get past its first outing before ending up as just another also-ran in a field that’s always been full of them?
But, if successful, what would such a plan need to possess?
Stability: Can’t be rocked by day-to-day events or disturbed by distractions of a violent nature.
Longevity: Has to stay the course, no loss of stamina or deliberate speed can be countenanced.
Simplicity: Must be understood at every level of society, from top to bottom.
Guaranteed outcome: No possibility of failure can be contemplated, none whatsoever, not now or in the future.
Well, if Mr. Abbas has a plan like this, then there’s a good chance for it to be successful. And nothing succeeds like success.
If not, there’s always the option of returning to the drawing board to try, try again.
Or maybe there’s a back-up plan already available and on standby.
