If the New York Times is moved to make such a stark pronouncement, can these latest peace negotiations last much longer? Is this their final curtain call and will the applause be somewhat less than thunderous?
At such a juncture, it’s very hard to see much beyond the immediate future.There is now no remaining sense of movement towards any type of agreement that might one day secure the promised land – and so much more besides.
Then it may be that securing ‘agreement’ is no longer the best method of approach. Some alternate arrangement might be able to serve instead, one in which the pressing need to settle matters once and for all takes precedence over conventional and time-honoured dealings in the matter.

A process that requires little in the way of formal affirmation but achieves a real type of peace nonetheless. So action should be taken – and soon – to fill the void about to be left if these present peace talks, like so many others before them, become a blurred and faded memory, dwindling forever down the long corridor of time.
