The Day After Assad Falls
It won’t be long now, the fighting is in Damascus, the end of Assad is near.
Despite the resistance that China and Russia have shown to any aggressive intervention against Assad from the Western world the Free Syrian Army seems to be doing a good job of bringing down the Assad dynasty on its own. Those still fighting for the regime do so with the fanaticism of people who know that they are on the verge of being held to account for the crimes that they have committed for decades under a dictatorial regime that rewarded friends and killed everyone else.
The army fighting for Assad resembles that of Libya in the dying days, filled with soldiers who have no choice but to fight in a losing battle with the knowledge that the hour is soon approaching where they will have to pay the price for years of decadence and brutality.
Once the Assad dynasty is at an end something new will replace it, but we have heard precious little about the Syrian forces fighting to bring Assad down and what they think of Iran and Israel.
Will the new regime continue to arm Hezbollah?
Will their hatred for Israel be so great that they will continue the Assad regime’s cooperation with Iran? (Despite the fact that their forces have been murdering Syrians since day one of the protests over a year ago).
And what will happen to that huge supply of chemical and biological weapons that Assad has stockpiled?
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
