The European Union needs new, innovative and forward -looking leaders

The Europan Union is now looking for a new leader to guide us into the next 5 years.  The stakes are high because the next EU leader and his cabinet will have to be very innovative, practical and forward looking to build up a real EU where employment, social justice, growth, industrialization and a common foreign policy are implemented.

I hope the next cabinet pursues the great vision and inspiration of the former EEC founders: Winston Churchill of the UK,  Rober Schuman from France, Konrad Adenauer from Germany and Paul Henri Spaak from Belgium  featured here in these pictures.  In their hard times after a devastating war to free Europe from the chains and atrocities of the Nazis, they knew who to unite peoples and craft a future for the EEC.

Now we need the same leadership again. The polls have made it clear that the majority of Europeans are dissatisfied with their political élites; they are fed up of unemployment and of uncontrolled immigration in many countries – hence the triumph of the FN in France or DPP in Denmark.  So if leaders of the different groups take into account all this they should be able to deflate these fears by a proper and realistic policy which addresses all these concerns.  Underestimating the eurosceptics and part of the far right ( not the Nazi ones such as the groupings from Hungary, Germany of Greece ) would be a gross mistake.  Ignoring some of the demands of the European Left and Ecologists for social rights would be very naive.

In short, a new, brave, consensual and innovative leadership is needed which makes its European citizens ” fall in love again ” with the EU.  If this leadership fails in the next years, we can say goodbye to the European Union project.
