Male chicks don’t produce enough meat and 7B of them (7,000,000,000) are destroyed globally annually. This is costly (and also kind of cruel) so a new system is welcomed that can show immediately if a new egg is a male or a female in the making. So you don’t have to breed the male eggs and then kill those chicks. Why you couldn’t market such male eggs beats me.
The inventors, looking for investors (money), do not talk about all the male chicks who currently are cruelly murdered. They are ‘useless’ for another reason. They can’t grow up to lay eggs. Seems to me that this technique could also be used to prevent their murder, but who knows?
In any case, meanwhile, keep in mind that treating egg-producing or meat-producing chickens kindly isn’t enough. What happens to 50% of the chicks who’re male and disposed of? Think about her brother, next time you get all misty with emotion about how well your free-range chicken had lived.
