We thought to be smarter than G^d
We could make machines stronger than horses. Then we found out that burning so much fuel heats up the Earth (greenhouse effect) that it threatens our very survival.
We could make butter that was spreadable straight from the fridge. Turns out that minute amounts of trans-fats can kill.
Everything deteriorates. Let’s make something indestructible! Plastic is now even covering our oceans, and nanoplastic and slightly larger plastic bits are flooding our bodies even before we know whether they do harm.
Telephones not only became mobile but can also allow us to see each other. What could be better? In a few decades, we created billions of people who can’t relate to others because they sit in a virtual bubble, and need to use drugs as never before to not kill themselves.
We replaced writing with typing. The result: most people now can’t write, read, or remember since what we type doesn’t stay in our memory.
Democracy with equality and human rights is very new. It’s definitely better than dictatorships, but it’s so unbalanced. Hurting oneself and lying are not against the law. The system is superior but ridiculously wasteful. It’s so bad that con artists and bigots now threaten to kill all democracies.
End previous century, leading thinkers agreed that all moral communities had beneficial goals. Theft and lying were always bad, and so was murder, etc. Now we have billions supporting lying, murder, and even suicide killings while the rich even hang on to their greed if it would kill us all.
Talking of which, cutting down the rain forests is like removing the world’s lungs, but money-hunger (greed) makes in go on unabated.
This is not to say we should not interfere. We can open up blocked blood vessels of the heart that used to kill us. We can save almost anyone with pneumonia, while that used to kill 50% of all those infected! Gene therapy is expected to save lives of people who never had a chance.
However, when we go too fast and big, we show we have no respect for the slow process of evolution. Evolution keeps everything balanced. Less is more! Thinking that everything faster is better is such arrogance.
Scientific progress yes, but cautiously please.
Run to save life, limb, and health, but go slow on how to ‘improve life.’
