Think again before you’d go imitate the average lifestyle in the USA. Only most working-class, Muslim, and Gay men seem eager to tie the knot.
In the US, if you get chronically sick, your life is over. Healthcare eats away your savings, and there is no social security net, unlike in Europe.
Social is a dirty word in the US that missed socialism that made Europe more livable. In the US, social = socialist = communist = no freedom = hell.
In Japan, it seems that society has two social layers: You work like crazy in top jobs and then you’ll live comfortably and the rest is dirt-poor.
In both countries, you need a fortune to raise even one child.
Raising broods was always expensive and an assault on your night rest and free time. But apparently, there are limits to how far men go to have kids.
I think there is one more reason why men are less interested in marriage than ever. Porn. Limitless electronic porn has changed sexuality for many teenagers and up from something once helping people to connect forever to something to pleasure oneself. Porn doesn’t make you blind or give you TB, and I wouldn’t yet worry about Hell because of it; rather, first fear it may turn you into a lonely, sex-crazed, self-centered, spoiled brat.
The I-me-and-myself era also seems to influence a socially-apt country as the Netherlands, where foreign workers are imported to help do the work.
Israel was founded by socialists. Jewish society is also ‘tainted’ by Jewish customs to take care of the socially weak. Although it’s been ravaged by capitalism, one still can live decently here with little money. School and bus fees are sensible; milk and bread have fixed prices and are subsidized.
So, it’s no surprise that many Jews and Muslims have large families here and that many people want to get married (not in that order, typically).
Everyone should feel free not to want a steady relationship and/or raise children. Some people or lives are just not fit for one or both. Yet, I think each individual should have at least one way to influence the future. And if single and/or introverted, consider how to combat loneliness.
Having said that, a society should ask itself what is wrong if soon, children will be rare, there will not be enough hands and heads to fill all jobs, and where large portions of the population live on their own forever.
Three words of caution. Be careful before you imitate US society. Secondly, US Jews, come live in Israel before you lose all your money.
And thirdly, do you really want to live a comfortable but lonely, sad life?
