Democracy needs hope like plants need water
Hopelessness, powerlessness, and carelessness paralyze many people around the world. Such passivity in the US is a bad example to the rest.
True, anti-democrats can use hope to lure voters to them. But, without hope, everyone will stay passive, and the will of the People is silenced.
The best justification for hope is that all fear and despair we feel come from our personal past. They are never coming from the future.
This can be proven easily. Answer yourself two questions. What details about the future do you fear or are you indifferent about most? What details in your past made you turn scared of passive ever since?
You see? Same details.
That doesn’t mean there is no present danger. But, dangers are best confronted calmly. Worry and be terrified as much as you want, but realize it’s from the past and be confident and full of willpower anyway.
Nice side effect: Calmness looks attractive. It creates confident followers. Drama just stirs sensation, but no consistent momentum for improvement.
Another thing that may help is knowing that shaking from fear heals fears. Crying repairs old hurts and disappointments. Laughter erases previous embarrassments. Yawning dissolves tension and being stuck.
Don’t just be confident. Be of good cheer too. Why be sour-faced the whole stretch to a sure victory for everyone? Hum a little song.
Enjoy the company. Happy, generous people are never alone.
As an activist, ensure you get good food, as little ‘recreational’ and medical drugs as possible, enough sleep and rest, and plenty of real closeness.
Even go the extra mile by doing things outside of your comfort zone.
So, when your emotions storm to the surface, fair chance that you’re doing great. Great enough to heal the past and defeat old demons forever while securing a better future and being true to yourself in the present.
Spread hope, shiver as you go. It’ll resolve better and faster than expected.
Full disclosure: After 2,000 years of dispersion, persecution, and genocide, Israel’s enhanced safety for Jews makes that many of us here, including our youth, are in the grip of despair. Yet, it’s something to laugh at, not to get impressed or defeatist about. It means that now, we’re pretty safe.
