Rabbi Boteach asks in the Jerusalem Post Why is Israel’s foreign minister attacking Poland after its stand against Iran? I will tell you why. And also point out mistakes he made in his partly well-researched article.
Israel’s Foreign Minister attacked Poland because lies about the Holocaust don’t hold. Their denial about complicity, Boteach dismisses as ugly anti-Semitism but – he claims – collaboration was just that, not what the German Nazis did, execute an industrial genocide on the Jews. The rabbi who travels the world to fight genocide (good for him), suddenly is mild when it comes to the Holocaust.
You can’t say that the collaborators were not really doing genocide, only the German Nazis did. It is not true that the only “real” perpetrators were Germans. Austrians were not any better. Many of the collaborators persecuted or killed Jews more enthusiastically than the German Nazis, even by bonfires, bullets and bayonets.
Polish Nazi-collaborators are not exonerated by the acts of Polish fighters against the Nazis or Polish protectors of Jews. The heroes are even showing that resistance was possible and so they indict the collaborators, not compensate for their failures.
Why did the Polish Resistance Army (up to half a million fighters!) not attack and liberate even one single extermination camp? Metal fatigue?
The Holocaust would not have been possible without Christian anti-Semitism, also in Poland.
The greatest Pope of all times, who changed the way Roman Catholics relate to Jews was Pope John XXIII. Not a later Polish Pope he names.
Friendship from Poland is not enough if the ills of the past are denied and unmentionable and apologies not uttered. It simply doesn’t sound like friendship but rather like whitewashing. The Poles outlawing the truth doesn’t help either.
The truth will set them free (John 8:32). Only the truth. Not the anger.
