Democracies have a hard time defending themselves. Everyone is so addicted to liberty and individual craziness, that only recently, it is beginning to become clear that freedom of speech does not include freedom to insult, threaten, or lie. There is some growing awareness that personal freedom does not include endangering the health of others (smoking in public). Also, that the personal ‘liberty’ to not wear a helmet or safety belt is too heavy a financial burden on society to carry.
Yet, the ill-informed, misled, and delusional who refuse to vaccinate against a pandemic are hard to force. People will go to court to demand the right and liberty to endanger their lives and those of others.
What a delight that an Israeli scholar from the bastion of personal liberty in Israel has now declared that it’s high time to make refusal to vaccinate a punishable offense. That would be challenged but no stronger an enemy than an idea whose time has come.
I have a second idea. Israel is very much a country of immigrants. Not just Jews. Most of the self-identified Palestinians come from elsewhere too — especially, Muslims without Jewish roots. Even Arafat was born in Cairo.
Israel is a State for the absorption of all Jews. However, there are exceptions. It doesn’t have to admit people who have infectious diseases that endanger the public. That law is already on the books.
Let’s threaten anti-vaxxers with deportation to their countries of origin.
I don’t say that should be done. The threat should suffice refuse-nicks.
Full disclosure: I have close friends who are super-Zionists and loony anti-vaxxers. I don’t want them to be expelled. But I do want the State to set them limits. Not me. The State. Thank you.
