To My Friends Living Outside of Israel
Governments rise and fall. Prime ministers and presidents come and go, some leaving legacies of progress and great accomplishment, others of division and failure. But Israel—the land, the people, the ruach—remains eternal. It is our home, not because of who governs it at any given moment, but because it is woven into our history, our identity, our future.
Too often, political turbulence leads to despair. Policies change, coalitions crumble, leaders disappoint. Some find themselves deeply invested in the outcome of each election, fearing that the wrong leadership will jeopardize the nation’s path. Others grow disillusioned, wondering whether the Israel they love can withstand political storms.
But Israel is not defined by its politicians. The Jewish people define it—by those who have fought, built, and died for it, and by those who continue to nurture it. Israel is defined by the ancient promise that has kept generations longing for Jerusalem, by the resilience of a people who returned after exile, and by the innovation and strength that have made Israel a beacon of hope against all odds.
Criticism of policies and leaders is valid and often necessary. Debate is a hallmark of a thriving democracy. But we must never let temporary governments obscure the deeper truth: Israel is not just a state; it is a home. And a home is not abandoned only because of bad leadership or celebrated only under good governance. It is cherished, protected, and upheld, no matter the circumstances.
At a time when polarization runs deep—both within Israel and among those who love it from afar—we must hold onto this truth. Israel transcends politics. It is bigger than any single government, any prime minister, or any crisis. Leaders will come and go, but Israel remains. It is our responsibility to ensure that it not only survives but thrives as the eternal homeland of the Jewish people.
In the face of adversity, we must recognize the importance of unity and solidarity among those who support Israel. In times of political division, it is crucial to focus on the common goal of ensuring Israel’s prosperity and security. By fostering a sense of community and shared purpose, we can overcome challenges that arise and continue to build a strong and vibrant Israel.
The sense of unwavering commitment to Israel is what binds its people together. It is seen in the determination of those who cultivate the land, who push the boundaries of innovation, and who stand vigilant against threats. It is felt in the hearts of those who pray for peace at the Western Wall and in the exuberance of children playing in the streets of Tel Aviv.
Israel’s strength lies in its ability to unite people from diverse backgrounds, languages, and cultures under a shared vision of a thriving homeland. This mosaic of humanity, everyone contributing their unique talents and perspectives, creates a rich tapestry of resilience and hope.
It is also imperative to remember that the essence of Israel is not confined to its physical borders. The spirit of Israel lives in every corner of the world where Jewish communities gather, celebrate their heritage, and support each other. This global network of solidarity reinforces the idea that Israel is more than a place, more than a political entity—it is a symbol of enduring faith and perseverance.
In times of turmoil, we can all draw strength from this collective bond and reaffirm our dedication to Israel’s future. Only we can ensure that Israel continues to be a beacon of light, a place where dreams are realized, and a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit.
Now that at least some commercial airlines are resuming service to Tel Aviv, lets hope that diaspora visits also resume.
