Gay and not-so-gay news
Six and a half years after British psychiatry and 21 years after the USA and again last year, Dutch psychiatry finally issued an apology for the ‘abominable damage’ it did over the years to gays and transgenders.
Yet, in the Netherlands, the first country in the world that legalized Gay Marriage and that enshrined the prohibition of discrimination based on sexual orientation in article 1 of its Constitution, conversion therapy is still practiced and not outlawed. This, despite almost the whole of the Dutch Parliament asking the Government twice to issue such a ban. The Government has yesterday stated to be against conversion therapy but leaves it to Parliament to come up with an actual law banning it. Maltha, Belgium, the UK, and Spain already showed that this can be done.
Only recently, a reputable scientific journal retracted an article about sexual orientation because the authors did not distinguish enough between humans and animals, lowering the standing of science. The authors still disagreed.
Talking of researchers, they fear, though, that a ban would make the fraudulent gay/trans-healers go underground. That’s a dilemma.
To make matters worse, the very respectable Council of State, the highest advisory in the Netherlands that issues advice before any bill is debated, has just opined that such a law seems unnecessary. It calls it understandable that one wants to give off a signal of disapproval, but coercion and discrimination are already criminalized.
I would say: Endangering others in traffic is an offense, but still, we have many details outlawed as running a red light. You don’t want again and again in every court case a debate if conversion therapy is torture or not.
