For many years, it has been difficult to trust the news which we read or saw on our viewing screens. Perhaps it began with the backlash of the media against the former US president. Spin was the order of the day and our brains became muddled as to what was truth and what was fiction.
The introduction of censorship on the behalf of the benefit of society by many digital sources of our information sent a chill down the backs of those fearful for Democracy. It did not seem that it could get worse. But of course – nothing remains static.
A new phenomenon has presented itself. Distrust of the word of the president of the United States. In past years, we may not have liked our president. We may not have approved of his values. But we based that on what he said and what he did. Never before (in my lengthy existence) do I remember a president intentionally lying to the public. The Afghanistan debacle has proven that predictions from the White House about the seriousness of a situation, and how the United States would protect its citizens…are worthless.
Continuing in the wake of the errors of Benghazi, Americans who serve the United States abroad can no longer trust that their government will protect them in crisis. If that is true, it is evident that local citizens in any dangerous zone cannot trust the promises of their American employers. How will the United States ever again find staff for their embassies and consulates… much less for their covert operations?
In my many expressions of American pride, I used to explain that the United States democracy was amazing, because even if an underqualified person was elected to the presidency, he/she would be surrounded by the finest analysts in every field to advise. America would continue to function because of the level of expertise among the advisors to the White House.
That should continue to be true today. Except that it is not. This is the first time that the experts have been irrelevant. The president does not hear their voices. He is listening elsewhere.
This is not a situation witnessed by the world before. Nations everywhere are protesting America’s ineptitude and lack of responsibility in the Afghanistan pull out. Newspaper analyses are asking how a mega power like the USA is incapable of a plan which required critical planning and protection of the Kabul airport and its own citizens.
Death, destruction, and horror resulted from this president’s inability to hear the voices of his legitimate advisors. He has massive blood on his hands. If the American people allow him to continue his rule, there will be more mayhem in the future.
That leaves Israel with a new crisis of its own. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett of Israel went to Washington DC to develop a working relationship with this same president. International headlines are full of Biden’s statements vis a vis Israel, Iran and the Middle East.
Why exactly should anyone believe anything that Biden says? According to the headline in today’s Jerusalem Post, all is under control. It reads “Biden to Bennett: If Iran diplomacy fails, we have ‘other options’ at our disposal. “
Why would anyone, anywhere trust this president? It is clear to all that the diplomacy with Iran has failed. The glib answers that Biden pulls out of his trove of old speeches are worthless now. We all recall his child-like analysis of the potential Taliban takeover. There is no sincerity to any of his declarations. He does not listen nor can he come to valid conclusions when presented with the facts.
Israelis are stunned to find themselves in this situation with the USA. Not only has congress lost many of its Israeli allies, but the White House has become a mirage of support. One sees it… but when one gets up close will it become a figment of our imagination?
Everyone concerned about the current situation is asking the same question. Who is in charge? It is clearly not Biden. Someone is telling him which questions to answer at Press Conferences, what to do Internationally, how to present himself, and when to hide from the media. Clearly this worked effectively during the election as they minimized his opportunities to reveal his ineptitude. His “handlers” are doing a very poor job indeed vis a vis what benefits the free world. It does not take a conspiracy-theorist to ask these questions. They require answers.
Who are those directing the president of the United States as to what he must say and what he must do?
