UN, EU, US – various abbreviations for political ineptitude in the Middle East

Back in 2007, the fanatical Islamist terror group Hamas overthrew the US-trained Fatah troops of the Palestinian Authority (PA) regime in Gaza.

Yesterday, the fanatical Islamist terror group ISIS – the Islamic State in Syria also known as ISIL or the Islamic State in the Levant – overthrew large parts of the US-trained Iraqi army.

Back in 2007, the speed with which Hamas overran Fatah strongholds and executed PA officials took the world community by surprise.

Yesterday, the speed with which ISIS/ISIL overran Iraqi army strongholds and executed army officers took the world community by surprise.

Fast forward to the always contentious relationship between the sovereign Jewish state of Israel and the anti-Semitic, genocidal regime of Mahmud Abbas and his Palestinian Authority. Here too the US administration, strongly urged on by the UN and the EU and comprehensively financed by the world community, is training PA troops to “maintain security” following an eventual agreement with Israel.

The question of course is just how fast these US-trained troops too will fold in the face of an even more extremist, racist and genocidal regime than that of the new PA + Hamas unity government, which the US fully supports, as do the UN and the EU.

No less an intellectual powerhouse than Albert Einstein once pithily noted that The definition of stupidity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Well, the US – and indeed the rest of the world community via its unquestioning and unconditional UN and EU political, diplomatic and financial support – continue to persevere in the myth that a rabidly anti-Jewish Palestinian Arab regime, whether in the guise of the PA alone or a PA + Hamas combination, is a suitable negotiating partner for Israel and indeed a reliable partner in whom the Jewish state can trust. The US, UN and EU persistently ignore the fact that the Palestinian Arab leadership has repeatedly demonstrated its utter disregard for already ratified agreements. They also consistently ignore the fact that every single case of US training of Arab troops has failed abysmally to staunch the swift and ruthless spread of Islamist fanaticism.

And yet the US wants Israel to trust the mettle of an already antagonistic PA military force, one equipped and trained by the US. With battle-hardened ISIS/ISIL militants spreading like wildfire across Syria and Iraq, and ISIS/ISIL forces already deployed on the Syria/Israel border, it has got to be the very definition of stupidity for the US or the wider world community to expect Israel to have any faith whatsoever in the ability of outside forces to maintain the security of the Jewish state. The more so since this particular outside force, the PA, is already virulently anti-Semitic and is also already ripe for overthrow by fanatical Islamist forces even now poised for action just beyond its territory.

It is time for the world community to take on board the reality of the events playing out across the Arab part of the Middle East, and to leave the Jewish part of the Middle East to look after its own affairs without the customary constant barrage of animosity, criticism and holier-than-thou – and totally counter-productive – commentary.

The more so since it is the world community, through its spinelessness and woeful inaction, that has repeatedly failed the suffering citizens of Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, Egypt and not least Syria. Among many, many other countries that are suffering under the yoke of increasingly strident Islamism.
