We see a US president who is going from blunder to blunder, from scandal to scandal, from lie to lie. How does he ever think to get away with this? Isn’t this unbelievable stupid? Can’t he do any better?
These questions are asked from the wrong frame of mind. Donald trump is running the White House as he has always run his business empire:
- Don’t spend too much time on details – time is money. A large success does not come about from pottering around. By thinking big, some things will fail and other will succeed. So on the successful points you build on. That’s how you get big.
- Things that go wrong you deduct from profit. If all goes wrong you go bankrupt and start all over again. It ain’t over ’till it’s over.
- Sticking to the truth is for losers. Besides, most truths are relative. The only objective truth is what makes money. If ideas hinder, deny them; if pronouncements help, promote them. Simple!
- People that work for you are often thinking small and have petty worries. Best to praise and encourage them. Yet, when they really bother you or become a liability, just fire them.
This has always worked for him.
I’m reminded of the simple-minded gardener in the 1979 American comedy-drama movie Being There. All this plant specialist knows stems [pardon the pun] from taking care of a garden and watching TV. Then he’s somehow misidentified as a high-brow guy and his simple words are constantly misunderstood as profound, metaphors about life, business and politics.
The parallels are striking. That’s how Trump’s directs his presidency. He’s a business man and all his simplistic assertions about making money are taken as deep figures of speech about human relationships and politics.
