Where were YOU When… Gedaliah and October 7?

There are no coincidences we believe and the juxtaposition of the delayed Fast of Gedaliah on October 6 leading into October 7 and within the 10 days of repentance is a triple cause for reflection.

Learning about the history of why the Fast day assumed such prominence in our history since in truth there are many important figures in our history whose assassination or death have not been the cause for a fast. However, in this case there is a reason attributed which is the most significant factor to consider.

WHY COMMEMORATE THE FAST OF GEDALIAH

Up until the time of the assassination there had been a continuous presence of the Jews in our homeland albeit at times a small presence but one non the less and even at the time of the story of Gedaliah after the Babylonian destruction of the temple, the Babylonians allowed the presence of the infirmed and women and elderly. However, with the assassination of Gedaliah, the Jews despite the warning of the prophet Jeremiah elected to leave Eretz Yisrael and flee to Egypt. This was the significant reason for the fast – for it signaled the first time that the country was in effect void of a Jewish presence.

FAST FORWARD TO TODAY

Fast forward to today and the commemoration on the heels of the Fast of Gedaliah of the infamous October 7 and one cannot but be struck by the response that despite the tragic day we have a major Jewish presence in Eretz Yisrael and an army second to none defending us.

The one glue that binds us together is our commitment to being proud Jews and our right and privilege to live in this land.

WHERE WAS I WHEN…

To me personally, I have lived in the geographic place where two horrendous historical events happened and the first question that is asked in each case from a historical perspective is “Where were You When ….”

And in the first case, I refer to the assassination of President John F Kennedy in Dallas, Texas. My response to the question was yes, I was living in Dallas and in high school.

In the case of October 7, I was and am proudly living in Eretz Yisrael and to all who have born witness to the events of October 7 we will never forget the day. Living in Eretz Yisrael is a reminder that that we are witnesses to miracles and we carry on our backs the payload of many wars and enemies, but this is the land that Hashem watches from the beginning to the end of the year.

During these days of repentance, there is ample cause for reflection. Most of all, may our prayers be answered for Shalom and the safe return of the hostages and safe return of our soldiers and may the prayer be answered for  the long awaited redemption.

Wishing you all Gmar Chatima Tova
