Which Party Truly Threatens Democracy?
The final stretch of the election is here. Candidates are making their last rounds on the campaign trail, and tensions are higher than ever, especially among undecided voters. Over recent months, claims have surfaced that the Republican Party and its presidential nominee, Donald Trump, pose a severe threat to our democracy. But just how true are those claims?
In reality, the Democratic Party, not the Republican Party, may pose a greater risk to democratic principles. Specific organizations and members within the Democratic Party could represent a far more significant threat to democracy than Donald Trump and the Republicans ever would.
Democrats have intensified their rhetoric against the Republican Party, with some using defamatory language and extreme comparisons. In a striking example, certain voices have even referred to Donald Trump as a fascist—a comparison many find both offensive and historically misleading.
Vice President Kamala Harris has been outspoken in her criticism of Donald Trump, even likening him to Adolf Hitler. “Donald Trump is out for unchecked power. He wants a military-like Adolf Hitler had, one that would be loyal to him rather than to our Constitution,” Harris stated. She continued, “He is unhinged, unstable, and if given a second term, there would be no one to stop him from pursuing his worst impulses.”
Harris’s statement risks minimizing the horrific atrocities for which Hitler was responsible, including the systematic genocide of over 6 million Jews. Equating a former U.S. president with a dictator responsible for unparalleled evil is a serious misstep if not substantiated by specific, parallel actions.
Similarly, Joy Behar, a co-host of The View, has drawn parallels between Trump and Hitler as well. “How many times do we have to hear him [Trump] refer to immigrants as animals? Hitler used similar language, calling for the ‘cleansing’ of Germany from so-called ‘parasites,’” Behar said. “It’s the same language Hitler used,” she added.
In reality, Trump has made a distinction between legal and illegal immigration, particularly referencing illicit immigrants who have committed violent crimes as “animals.” While referring to criminals as animals may still be controversial, it is markedly different from advocating the genocide of an ethnic group.
In recent months, Donald Trump has faced an overwhelming array of legal challenges, leading to a strong movement aimed at convicting him of multiple crimes and sanctioning those who defend him. One prominent example of this effort is The 65 Project, explicitly established to disbar Trump-aligned attorneys and target his legal teams.
The 65 Project poses a significant threat to democracy, particularly in the context of our electoral processes. The project undermines the fundamental principle of legal representation by targeting lawyers who have defended Trump or criticized perceived injustices in the electoral system.
The Project 65 group even placed ads in legal journals to warn lawyers not to risk losing their law licenses by defending Donald Trump. Discouragement of legal advocates from taking on clients based on fear of retribution goes entirely against the protections afforded to all individuals under the law. It compromises the integrity of our legal system.
Project 2025 has been the subject of intense media scrutiny for months. Media outlets have repeatedly published stories connecting Donald Trump and his campaign to the initiative. Yet many of these portrayals rely on selective statements taken out of context, creating a distorted image of Trump’s intentions.
It’s not unusual for biased narratives about political candidates to surface. However, when the posts become so skewed that they mislead the public, it raises serious questions about whether the media is a reliable source of political coverage. Trump’s campaign has clarified that he is not affiliated with Project 2025, yet coverage suggests otherwise.
Even Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, has an official page on her website accusing Trump of supporting Project 2025. “I am a former prosecutor. Donald Trump’s DNA is all over Project 2025,” Harris said in an interview.
Stories like these do more than misrepresent candidates; they risk eroding trust in the media and government as a source of factual information. When misleading narratives are widely circulated, the public is left with a skewed picture of campaigns and candidates. In a democracy, accurate information is essential for informed decision-making, and narratives that distort candidates’ positions undermine that foundation.
Israel is a critical ally for the U.S. in safeguarding security and advancing democratic values in the Middle East, a region where these principles are frequently under threat. As the only true democracy in the area, Israel upholds freedoms and governance practices that set it apart from surrounding authoritarian regimes. Its commitment to these values aligns with U.S. interests, making Israel an essential partner in promoting stability and providing a reliable point of influence in an otherwise volatile region.
Harris’s comments towards Israel have been nothing short of bigoted and wrong. At the UN Climate Summit in Dubai, Harris called on Israel to do more to protect civilians in Gaza from the “devastating” war.
The government of Israel has done everything necessary to provide needed aid to civilians in Gaza. Since Oct. 7th, Gaza has received more than 1 million tons of humanitarian assistance, allowed in by Israel. The United Nations even published a report proving the absence of famine in Gaza.
Harris invited Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a self-proclaimed activist for the alleged humanitarian crisis in Gaza, to deliver a prime-time address at the Democratic National Convention. Harris’s lack of support for Israel could threaten the global movement of democracy.
As the election nears its end, voters must question which party truly upholds democratic values. Intense rhetoric, legal targeting, and media distortions threaten democracy far more than partisan disagreements. True democracy requires respect for diverse voices and fair representation. When political gain overshadows these principles, democracy itself is at risk.
