Why does Judaism forbid idol worship so much?

Why is it one of the worst sins?

The first question should be, Who cares if you’d bow don’t to an idol? Why is that wicked, worse than silly or stupid? Who gets hurt?

You could say that when you allow for idolatry, Jews will start mingling with non-Monotheists and, in a few generations, disappear.

OK. But Atheists don’t worship idols. Why is merging with them not so bad? “If only they abandoned Me but not My Torah”?

You could say that in our generation, idol worship is not as bad and deep as it used to be. That’s what the Sages say.

OK. But it’s still one of the worst sins. Why? Maybe because some people dedicate their lives to making money or fame, instead of to G^d? That’s a waste. But one of the worst sins in the world?

Maybe it once was one of the worst sins and it stayed like that because Judaism is a Tradition. We don’t like changing things. ‘How many Orthodox rabbis does it take to change a light bulb?’ ‘Change?!?’ But Judaism evolves, adopts, and acknowledges changes in reality. It doesn’t ride the craze of the day/era, but Jewish Law is recalibrated regularly.

OK. Maybe idol worship now is not trusting only in G^d, not thinking G^d Alone has all P^wer. That’s bad. But one of the worst sins in the world? There is just one more power: our decision to team up with Him.

We find a warning against idolatry in a sheer endless number of places in the Written and the Oral Law.

I think that this ‘dangerous’ idol worship is none of the above. What then?

When we talk to G^d, Who do we talk to? ‘Nothing’? Nothing is not G^d. ‘Our heavenly Father and King’? That is an image. That is forbidden.

But we can’t relate to something less than nothing. We must imagine G^d to relate to Him. That He hears us. He understands us. That He loves us. That He trusts us, cares. Idol worship is thinking that these images are Him. Creating G^d in our imagination. Limiting Him to our needs.

As soon as we have imagined G^d, we must disavow the image. G^d ‘is’ beyond. He ‘is’ all That we need Him to be, but more. Infinitely more.

Yet, his originalities seem to root deeply in traditional Judaism, though they may grow in unexpected directions. In fact, he claims he's modernizing nothing. Rather, mainly basing himself on the basic Hebrew Torah text, he tries to rediscover classical Jewish thought almost lost in thousands of years of stifling Gentile domination and Jewish assimilation.
