Wish I Didn’t Have to State the Obvious

Every now and again I find myself irritated by some of my American friends, family and acquaintances. The people I speak of turn their noses up toward Israel for not being advanced enough or for lacking in certain products or comforts. They express frustration and disappointment over and over again that things here are not up to their standard of living. Some systems are not quick enough, there is too much red tape to deal with, why don’t we have 237 different potato chips to choose from and why the hell isn’t there regular decaffeinated Coke Cola????
I’m sorry that Fox’s, Honingman, and Castro are not as comprehensive as Old Navy, Gap and Banana Republic. I’m sorry if Superpharm is not CVS, Duane Reade or Wallgreenes. I’m sorry if it’s not endearing to you that we use the post office to do just about everything.

Israel is not America. America has existed for 238 years, Israel for only 67 years. America is a country 9,826,675 square km large with a population of 313.9 million. Israel is 20,072 square km small, with a population of 8.059 million. America has many natural resources while Israel is mostly desert. Israel has been in a constant state of war surrounded by tens of millions of people determined to wipe her of the map. America is an island of security, a veritable fortress of solitude virtually untouched by foreign forces. It does not take a genius to understand why Israel is not America; it can’t be. It doesn’t have the man power, space, resources, peaceful existence that America has in order to be concerned with excessive extravagance and overindulgence. I can predict the retort from my computer chair as keyboards snap back at me that there is no reason why we can’t do this or we can’t have that! I mean if they have the ability to make Diet Coke decaf would it be such a stretch to make regular decaf.

Okay I’ll allow you that, but I’ll tell you why. Israelis are a stubborn, stubborn people. Yes, this quality has it drawbacks, but it also has its merits. If we weren’t this way we would not have the thriving country that exists today. It is because we are stubborn that we are able to grow plants, flowers, fruits and vegetables where they have no business growing. It is this trait that doesn’t allow us to give up until we find cures for diseases and new technology nobody dreamed could exist. I think we not only defied odds with the little we have, but have done the miraculous. Our little oasis in the desert is a dream come true. Israel is a beautiful, consistent work in progress. We advance, grow, and become more awesome everyday. I think that’s cause for marvel… why don’t you?
