15 questions about Israel for the next President
Next week, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump will face off in their first debate. With the war in Gaza nearing its one-year anniversary without the likelihood of an imminent ceasefire, it is imperative that the candidates make clear their positions on this conflict and the broader geopolitical issues in the Middle East. Here are the questions they should answer:
- What pressure will you place on Hamas to achieve a ceasefire? What will you ask of Israel? What else can the US do? What pressure will you apply on Iran?
- Under what conditions, if any, will you restrict the sale or shipment of arms to Israel?
- Have you seen any evidence that Israel has committed war crimes in Gaza? Has it committed genocide?
- If Hamas violates the terms of a ceasefire, would you support a re-engagement by the Israeli Defense Forces?
- After the war ends, will UNRWA have the same role in Gaza as it did before October 7? If not, what changes will you support?
- After the war ends, how should Gaza be prevented from re-arming itself? What do you envision as the governing structure for Gaza?
- What steps will you take to prevent Iran from developing or acquiring nuclear weapons?
- What steps will you take to end the ongoing attacks from Hezbollah in Lebanon? Will you support an Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon up to the Litani River?
- Do you support the movement of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem?
- Do you support Israel’s annexation of East Jerusalem, including the Western Wall, and the Golan Heights?
- Do you regard the settlements in the West Bank as illegal under international law?
- Do you support the IHRA definition of antisemitism? What steps would you take to address antisemitism in the US?
- Will you restrict federal funding for public colleges and universities that adopt anti-Israel policies?
- Do you perceive the actions of the UN, the International Criminal Court or the International Court of Justice to be biased against Israel? If so, what structural reforms would you support for those organizations?
- What are the obstacles to achieving long-term peace in the region, including a two-state solution?
