19 AND Grr (Great and Rage)

19 years ago I walked down the aisle in wedded bliss, and feel blessed and grateful to feel the exact same way today. I have found my partner in life, and we bob and weave in harmony. Sometimes we disagree, we are human, we speak our truth and find our way back together. My parents are married 54 years, Thank God! It is all about sticking together, leaning on each other and never silencing each other’s soul. Did you know that every 19 years the Hebrew Date and the Solar Calendar align? Last Friday, August 14 and Rosh Chodesh Elul were on the same day, I invited my holy girlfriends, and we finished the whole book of Psalms, Tehilim.

My husband was born in Israel, and I am still learning how to say the letter that sounds like “R” properly in Hebrew. I was born in the USSR, grew up in Miami with Latin flavor, and speak American English, which are three completely different pronunciations. My ulpan teacher said it sounds similar to the German R, while the closest to the original Hebrew is by Jews from Yemen.

Finally after two years in Israel, I learned how to say the letter Reish, ר. My mother, who graduated Moscow conservatory, in her musical explanation, finally cleared it up for me. She said it is a sound in your throat that is between a G and an R. I dare you to try to say the word Torah in all these different ways. Now when I pray I have to consciously reteach myself. This can make a person react in one of two ways. You either are Grrreat! Does anyone remember Frosted Flakes and Tony the Tiger? The other response is to growl, frustrated with just a Grrr. So the choice is to feel Great or if you take out the letter T, which stands for Torah, Tefilah, Teshuva and you can also throw in Tzedaka in English we use a T first!

That spells R A G E! Rage can be anger or it can be desire, basically controlling you if you let it. I choose, G R E A T, and gratitude, which scientifically rewires your brain.

I love numbers and in Hebrew, every letter has a value. For instance 17 spells good, Tov and 18 spells life, Chai. It was so fun to research what is 19, and my mother reminded me that one of our most powerful prayers, the Amida, has 19 verses, even though it is called the Shmone Esrei, which means eighteen. Also the in the Tehilim, Psalm 119 has many secrets.

In Mispar Katan (Small/Reduced Gematria), the city name ירושלים (Jerusalem) reduces exactly to 19. What I learned in my Kaballah Cafe class this morning with Rabbi Goldberg of Chabad of Rechavia: if Yerushalaim is spelled the original way, and when Moshiach comes with two yuds, it would be twenty. However, he said that since I am married 19 years, and going towards my 20th year, then it all aligns with one yud this year, and one yud next year. He also said that if you count each letter when you spell out the word YUD, the first letter equals 10, the second letter equals 6 and the third letter equals 4, for a total of 20!

One of the best compliments I ever received is from my friend Nava, she always talks about her beautiful mother, Tova and calls her the mother of all living, like Chava, אם כל חי. It is fun for me, with my degree in Hospitality Management, I love to be the hostess with the mostess!

Today and every week I am part of the most magical Shabbat in Jerusalem. Today I was helping a four year old girl find her way to the ladies room, and then had a great conversation with Walter Bingham, a Holocaust survivor, who told us that he is 102 and eight months! A warrior from October 7, Nimrod, shared with us that when he went against orders and went to the South after he heard about the horrors, said the bodies all over the streets looked like the Holocaust. His courage with 14 other brave souls, saved lives in Nir Oz and Beeri.

I have not seen my husband in person in one year. There are so many miracles, so grateful to spend the upcoming holidays together as a family. A friend had a baby boy on Shabbat at 43 weeks.
