A Cautionary Warning to the Democratic Party
I am a lifelong Democrat, and my party seems to be doing all it can to alienate Jewish voters by supporting the primary win of anti-Israel advocate, Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist of America, as our nominee for Mayor of New York. Compounding the error, when the State Executive Committee of the North Carolina Democratic Party passed a resolution calling for an arms embargo against Israel, along with a barrage of other anti-Israel resolutions has not helped the situation. The 2026 elections are critical for Democrats to retake the House and Senate and stop Trump’s horrible policies and derail his attack on democracy itself, yet our party seems to be hell bent on attacking Israel for defending itself. We are giving the Republicans a gift, thus potentially wounding ourselves with Jewish and pro-Israel voters.
The irony is that some in the Party clearly have no clue as to why most Jews are incensed about the anti-Israel direction that those party members who are also members of the Democratic Socialists of America, are trying to take us. Let us be very clear to our Democratic Party colleagues, we Jews are one of the many indigenous people of the Middle East who have had their lands stripped away from them by numerous colonization’s, including the Egyptian, Persian, Greek and Roman, as well as the Arab and Islamic colonization (which started in 650 CE and ended in 1918 C.E.) We Jews have been one of the few indigenous peoples in the world to recover our land after more than 2,000 years occupation by a variety of conquerors.
So, the irony is if we were some other indigenous people such as the first People of Canada or Australia or the United States trying to defend against some existential threat, such as the October 7th attack by Hamas, Democrats would be out demonstrating and voicing support without question. The Party should stop making decisions based on a lie that we Jews are European colonizers of Palestine, when the truth is that we are the indigenous people of that land, who have successfully wrested our land from Arab, Ottoman and British colonizers.
Oh, and here is another unique idea, if you only criticize Israel for defending itself and you do not criticize Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Iran for starting the war and then hiding behind civilians, thereby causing the deaths of many Gazans, then may be you are showing your own bias and may be a little bit of your own brand of antisemtism.
So yes, if we want to lose any chance to retake the House and the Senate and stopping Trump, we should stop being distracted by supporting one-sided anti-Israel resolutions and candidates. Instead, we must fight back against Trump and the Republicans who are hell bent on impoverishing us, making us ill, destroying US alliances, destroying our environment, and most of all destroying our democracy so that they can make the rich richer and the poor poorer.
