When the World Forgets Its Compass: Israel and the Crisis of Moral Clarity

After the Trump-brokered Gaza Deal, the last living Israeli hostages finally came home. They were broken, pale from years without sunlight, and scarred by unthinkable cruelty,  but alive. Their testimonies stunned Israel and the world alike.

They spoke of being chained like animals, starved for months, deprived of showers, and forced to brush their teeth with infested toothbrushes. Some were locked for years in rooms with no daylight. And the Bibas baby boys never even made it back. Hamas called it resistance.

Yet across the streets of London, Amsterdam, New York, and Paris, crowds continue to wave the flag of this so-called “resistance.” They chant slogans that call for Israel’s erasure, blind to the fact that those who commit such atrocities are the same ones they glorify.

Somewhere, the moral compass of the West lost its north.

The Breaking of a Moral Compass

A moral compass is that inner guide that distinguishes right from wrong, even when it’s uncomfortable. It is what reminds us that justice isn’t defined by politics, popularity, or hashtags.

But something fractured in the West’s collective sense of right and wrong. Too many have learned to call cruelty “justice,” to mistake victimhood for virtue, and to justify violence as “resistance.”

Each time someone says, “Yes, but Israel…” after seeing the slaughter of civilians, the kidnapping of children, or the torture of innocents, that “but” echoes the sound of a broken moral compass.

Different Worlds, Different Values

In Western societies, morality is often measured by empathy, by the ability to feel another’s pain and value human life above all. In parts of the Middle East, however, the cultural lens is different. Death in the name of ideology can be glorified; suffering is weaponized.

When Hamas militants appear weeping on camera, it’s not confession, it’s performance. They glorify death while the West romanticizes their despair. They burn and murder under the banner of “resistance,” and too often, the world nods along, mistaking propaganda for principle.

Israel’s Uncomfortable Integrity

Israel, with all its flaws, remains a vibrant democracy. It protects minorities, debates its government openly, and mourns every innocent life, even those of its enemies. It is a country constantly holding itself to impossible moral standards while surrounded by those who hold none.

Israel abided by the ceasefire terms. Hamas broke them. Israel returned convicted terrorists to free hostages. Hamas still hides bodies and refuses to release the living. Yet in the eyes of many, Israel is still the one condemned.

Moral clarity today demands courage, the courage to see truth beyond the noise.

The Call for Conscience

If your moral compass points anywhere but toward truth, it’s not a compass,  it’s a mirror reflecting your biases.

Supporting Hamas or excusing its ideology after everything the survivors have revealed is not a political statement. It is a moral failure.

The choice before the world remains stark yet simple:
Stand with life, or with those who sanctify death.
Stand with the child who emerged from darkness, or with those who kept him there.

Because a true moral compass does not point toward comfort. It points toward conscience.

And today, the world’s conscience is being tested, again, by the story of Israel.

About the Author
CEO of Time to Stand Up for Israel, a nonprofit organization with a powerful mission: to support Israel and amplify its voice around the world. With over 200,000 followers across various social media platforms, our community is united by a shared love for Israel and a deep commitment to her future. My journey as an advocate for Israel began early. When I was 11 years old, my father was deployed to the Middle East through his work with UNTSO. I had the unique experience of living in both Syria and Israel, and from a young age, I witnessed firsthand the contrast in cultures and realities. That experience shaped me profoundly. Returning to the Netherlands, I quickly became aware of the growing wave of anti-Israel sentiment — and I knew I had to speak out. Ever since, I’ve been a fierce and unapologetic supporter of Israel. I’m not religious, but my belief is clear and unwavering: Israel has the right to exist, and Israel has the duty to defend herself. My passion is rooted in truth, love, and justice. I’m a true Zionist at heart. From my first breath to my last, I will stand up for Israel.
