A Gentile’s guide to end Antisemitism, helping Jews to pierce the glass ceiling

Safety and honor to the Jews and proclaiming them a source of blessing!

Europe has now a Commission Coordinator on ‘Combating Antisemitism and Fostering Jewish Life.’ It sounds like the ‘Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day.’ Don’t just focus on the dreadful. That is nice.

But we can do more. Much more, for the same money. European non-Jews can set as their goal the promotion of safety and honor to the Jews.

This would, no doubt, inspire the resistance narrative against other oppressions, like safety for women (not just agitating against violence).

Supremacy against Jews predates the Holocaust by millennia. And it is still very much alive, even among people who can honestly say that they adore and support us Jews! It has several friendly but insidious faces: Feeling pity for Jews, a wish born from ‘generosity’ to convert Jews to one’s own ‘superior’ religion, seeing Jews as faultier or weaker than oneself.

What better antidote against a superiority complex vis-à-vis the Jews than respecting them and expressing reverence for them?

Love for Jews would be nice but is often misunderstood as ‘feeling good about.’ “Waiter, do you have fish? I love fish.” Untrue. If you’d love fish, you wouldn’t eat it. The Biblical commandment to love others means: to act such that the other feels loved by you! Also, the Torah advises non-Jews to ‘bless the Jews.’ That doesn’t mean to bestow blessings upon us, pray for us. That would be an ultimate chutzpa, assuming that a Gentile’s prayer would find more favor with G^d than prayers by the Jews.

Rather, the Biblical Commandment correctly translated is: to recognize and acknowledge Jews as a source of blessing for everyone. It’s true too.

See Jews as a source of blessing (and survival, not of suffering).

Now, friends, stop feeling so good about or so much pity for the Jews. And Jews, stop feeling so honored when showered with love or pity. Rather, let’s grant Jews safety and honor, and recognition as a source of blessing!

You will end jealousy and idealization of Jews when you notice correctly that any advantage Jews have is acquired by hard work, not privilege.

But there is more, Gentiles could do. NB: I don’t say: should do. This is all not to get a diploma but rather, to work together for a better world for all.

Every one of the things done is great but before you did anything, recognize that you’re good, loveable, and powerful already.

You don’t need Jews to agree with what you see. You have your own viewpoint and wisdom to contribute. Do consider their objections, though.

Ending Petty Antisemitism

The first priority is to uproot petty Antisemitism. Not the folks who want to murder Jews. They’re in the crosshairs of law enforcement and the IDF.

No, we need to end any trace of disliking Jews, feeling annoyed by Jews, wanting to standardize Jews to fit the general population’s qualities, finding Jews strange (or oh so normal), not feeling concerned about Jews.

Note and kill stereotypes of Jews, that most Jews are right-wing, White, rich, smart, come from a safe home and close-knit community, feel safer with Jews than with Gentiles, are religious, see things like Christians, etc.

Without widespread ordinary small irritations, bigotry, and stereotypes about Jews, the big anti-Semites would have no support at all.

A special and important aspect of finishing off Antisemitism needs to happen in the framework of one’s class. Gentiles who are blue-color workers and trade unionists need to step over their embarrassment and welcome all working-class Jews. Same between middle-class Gentiles and Jews, and wealthier Gentiles and Jews. The rejection by the working class enables the rich to keep leading Jews hostage and work as their slaves for their narrow and not the general interest for some short-term safety.

Another important lesson to teach is that often oppressed groups are set up against each other by those who most profit in wealth and power from continuation of the oppressive society. What Jews and other groups must understand is given by the Dutch saying: ‘Two opposing groups fighting makes a third party win.’ Depending on the history and geography often set up against Jews are: Blacks, poorer people, Marxists, and Muslims. Jews and the others are natural allies but are pitted against each other.

Do It For You

Don’t fight Antisemitism for the Jews’ sake. 1. It is a problem created by Gentiles so they then should clean up the mess. 2. Gentiles should oppose Jews-hatred because they don’t want to live in a world full of hatred. 3. Working for a world free of Antisemitism will need you to overcome ways in which you were oppressed: it will need you to fight for your liberation:

Stop being so timid and passive. Your actions are important and crucial.
Stop feeling bad and guilty. Instead, act optimistically and with responsibility and hope.

Unite with others to make the activism more fun and efficient. On our own, we don’t have much muscle. But together, the sky is the limit.

Help Jews Unite

Gentiles, if they want, can be very powerful in helping Jews. Not because Jews lack abilities. Rather, we tend, like every heavily oppressed group, to in-flight and to attack our leaders. Caution: You can only do this humbly and well when you’ve begun to clean out your own petty Antisemitism.

So, tell Jews that you value every Jew. Tell them that you don’t make differences between different fractions. It’s a better reminder than Nazis hating us all equally. And appreciate and support our leaders out-loud.

Help Jews feeling bad about being Jewish, ashamed of Jews in general, or certain Jews in particular, to be proud of their roots, heritage, and nation.

Tell Jews who promote feminism, making poorer Jews more visible, etc. within Jewish circles that this has nothing to do with Jews or Judaism being not good enough. Every oppressed group and liberation movement needs to clean up its history and combat oppression within its ranks.

Jews often flip between over-cautiousness (we don’t blame the victim) and complete naivety. Tell naive Jews that they can hold on to their optimism but should let go of their fantasy that Jews-hatred is no big deal.

This was written from scratch in a few hours. Don’t consider it perfect.

He taught Re-evaluation Co-counseling, became a social activist, became religious, made Aliyah, and raised three wonderful kids. He wrote an unpublished tome about Jewish Free Will. He's a strict vegan since 2008. He's an Orthodox Jew but not a rabbi. * His most influential teachers (chronologically) are: his parents, Nico (natan) van Zuiden and Betty (beisye) Nieweg, Wim Kan, Mozart, Harvey Jackins, Marshal Rosenberg, Reb Shlomo Carlebach, and, lehavdil bein chayim lechayim: Rabbi Dr. Natan Lopes Cardozo, Rav Zev Leff, and Rav Meir Lubin. * Previously, for decades, he was known to the Jerusalem Post readers as a frequent letter writer. For a couple of years, he wrote hasbara for the Dutch public. His fields of attention now are varied: Psychology (including Sexuality and Abuse), Medicine (including physical immortality), Science (statistics), Politics (Israel, the US and the Netherlands, Activism - more than leftwing or rightwing, he hopes to highlight Truth), Oppression and Liberation (intersectionally, for young people, the elderly, non-Whites, women, workers, Jews, LGBTQIA, foreigners and anyone else who's dehumanized or exploited), Integrity, Philosophy, Jews (Judaism, Zionism, Holocaust and Jewish Liberation), Ecology and Veganism. Sometimes he's misunderstood because he has such a wide vision that never fits any specialist's box. But that's exactly what many love about him. Many of his posts relate to affairs from the news or the Torah Portion of the Week or are new insights that suddenly befell him. * He hopes that his words will inspire and inform, reassure the doubters but make the self-assured doubt more. He strives to bring a fresh perspective rather than bore you with the obvious. He doesn't expect his readers to agree. Rather, original minds must be disputed. In short, his main political positions are: anti-Trumpism, for Zionism, Intersectionality, non-violence, democracy, anti the fake peace process, for original-Orthodoxy, Science, Free Will, anti blaming-the-victim and for down-to-earth optimism. Read his blog how he attempts to bridge any discrepancies. He admits sometimes exaggerating to make a point, which could have him come across as nasty, while in actuality, he's quite a lovely person to interact with. He holds - how Dutch - that a strong opinion doesn't imply intolerance of other views. * His writing has been made possible by an allowance for second-generation Holocaust survivors from the Netherlands. It has been his dream since he was 38 to try to make a difference by teaching through writing. He had three times 9-out-of-10 for Dutch at his high school finals but is spending his days communicating in English and Hebrew - how ironic. G-d must have a fine sense of humor. In case you wonder - yes, he is a bit dyslectic. November 13, 2018, he published his 500th blog post with the ToI. If you're a native English speaker and wonder why you should read from people whose English is only their second language, consider the advantage of having a peek outside of your cultural bubble. * To find his earlier blog posts on a certain subject XXX, among his over 1200 ones, go to the right-top corner of the Times of Israel page, click on the search icon and search "zuiden, XXX".
