A Meditation Before Laying Tefillin On Tisha B’Av

I believe that it has been close to twenty years that I lead a Tisha B’Av pilgrimage reading passages of Lamentations where either Jews or non-Jews have suffered khurban (destruction) in our day, or are in danger of khurban. While to this day we recall the destruction of our two Temples and exile as national tragedies of unfathomable proportions, today’s agony is also a bottomless pit of sorrow and suffering. From the Gaza Envelope to Palestinian shepherding communities that have been forced to flee their homes, the agony is as real for those who have suffered loss and been uprooted.

We of course will not only focus on the khurban we will confront, but also seek to strengthen our commitment to prevent the next khurban and, where possible, to bringing people home. Seeing as our tradition allows us a whisper of hope by Tisha B’Av afternoon, we will remember that we must be God’s partners in hope – in bringing about a world where every human being honors and respects God’s Image in every other human being.

For those who are interested in joining us for the morning, for minkha and and/or for the afternoon, here is the link to register. We can still accommodate.

You can participate virtually as we will go live at each stop. You will find us live on my Facebook page: Arik Ascherman.

For those of you commemorating Tisha B’Av in other ways, I wish to offer you the possibility of using the kavannah (meditation/reflection) we will recite as we carry out the unique Tisha B’Av tradition of laying tefillin at Minkha. English follows the Hebrew:

A Meditation When Donning Tefillin For Tisha B’Av Minkha Prayers as a Part of The Tisha B’Av Pilgrimage 5786

בית של ראש ובית של יד – בקישורי שמך מצוותך שוב מחוברים לשכלנו ולבבנו;

אין פאר בנו כאשר קהילות שלמות נאלצו לברוח מבתיהם ומבתיהן בין בצו, בין מפחד מאלימות, בין באיומי רובים;

אין פאר בנו כאשר אנשים ונשים נאלצו לפרק את בתיהם ובתיהן במו ידיהם וידיהן רק משום שהם והן אינם יהודים ויהודיות;

אין פאר בנו כאשר השארנו בני ובנות עמינו, ובני ובנות עם אחר ללא הגנה בעת שבני בליעל התנפלו על בתיהם ובתיהן;

We are about to don tefillin in preparation for our Tisha B’Av Minkha prayers \

The splendor we forwent this morning agonizing over disasters past and present

The bayit (house) for our head and the bayit for our arm – Knots spelling Your Name will again bind your mitzvot to our mind and next to our heart

But there is not yet true splendor when there are those who lack houses because they live in poverty

We have no splendor when fellow Jews burn homes and expel their residents simply because they are not Jews

We have not splendor when entire communities are forced to flee their homes whether because of orders, or fear of violence or at gunpoint

We have no splendor when fellow human beings are forced to dismantle their own homes simply because they are not Jewish.

We have no splendor when we have left either Jews or non-Jews defenseless when evildoers fell upon their homes

Nevertheless, we will now don our tefillin because we have not lost hope

In so binding Your Name and Your Words we promise to renew our commitment

We will do everything in our power to be Your partners in bringing about the day when we will have true glory

Because we will embody in Zion Your Mercy, Your Loving-kindness and Your Justice

Every man and every woman will sit under their vine and under their fig tree and in their home, and none shall make them afraid.

Note: Our sages termed tefilllin “peer,” that could be translated as “splendor” or “glory” or something that beautifies us. Traditionally we do not wear tefillin on Shabbat and holidays because those days have sufficient pe’er without tefillin. On Tisha B’Av we do not don tefillin for our morning prayers because we are in the depths of our mourning and agony. Our tradition teaches that the fires in the Temple went out around noon. Therefore Tisha B’Av is the one time a year that we wear tefillin fo minkha because a whisper of hope returns to us even though we are still in deep mourning.
